Zoroastrianism and the Environment: A Contemporary Perspective

Zoroastrianism is one of the oldest monotheistic religions in the world, dating back to the 6th century BCE in ancient Persia. It is based on the teachings of Zoroaster, who proclaimed that there is only one supreme God, Ahura Mazda, and that humans have a moral duty to choose between good and evil. Zoroastrianism also has a strong emphasis on the environment, as it regards nature as a manifestation of God’s creation and a sacred gift to humanity.

Zoroastrians believe that the natural world is governed by seven divine beings, called Amesha Spentas, who represent aspects of God’s attributes and virtues. These are: Vohu Manah (Good Mind), Asha Vahishta (Best Truth), Khshathra Vairya (Desirable Dominion), Spenta Armaiti (Holy Devotion), Haurvatat (Wholeness), Ameretat (Immortality), and Spenta Mainyu (Holy Spirit). Each of these Amesha Spentas is associated with a natural element, such as fire, water, earth, air, plants, animals, and humans. Zoroastrians worship these elements through rituals and prayers, and seek to protect and preserve them from pollution and corruption.

Zoroastrianism also teaches that the world is in a cosmic struggle between good and evil, represented by Ahura Mazda and Angra Mainyu (the Destructive Spirit). This struggle will culminate in a final battle at the end of time, when Ahura Mazda will triumph over Angra Mainyu and restore the world to its original perfection. Zoroastrians hope for this event, called Frashokereti, which means “making wonderful” or “renovation”. Until then, they strive to live in harmony with nature and contribute to its well-being.

Zoroastrianism’s relevance in today’s environment is evident in its ethical principles and ecological values. Zoroastrians are expected to practice good thoughts, good words, and good deeds, which reflect their respect for God, nature, and humanity. They are also encouraged to practice charity, justice, compassion, and moderation, which foster social and environmental responsibility. Zoroastrians have a concept of khvarenah, which means “glory” or “fortune”, and refers to the divine energy that flows through all living beings. By living virtuously and harmoniously with nature, Zoroastrians can enhance their khvarenah and attract blessings from God.

Zoroastrianism also offers a holistic and hopeful vision of the environment, which can inspire people of different faiths and backgrounds. Zoroastrians view nature as a sacred gift that should be cherished and shared with all creatures. They also believe that nature has a purpose and a destiny, which will be fulfilled in the future when God will renew the world and bring peace and joy to all. Zoroastrians celebrate this hope through festivals such as Nowruz (New Year), which marks the spring equinox and the renewal of life.

Zoroastrianism is a rich and ancient religion that has much to offer to the contemporary world. Its environmental ethics and values can help us to appreciate and protect the natural world, as well as to live in harmony with ourselves and others. Its eschatological vision can also give us hope and motivation to work for a better future for ourselves and our planet.
