What is analysis? A text can be summarized: that is, you can extract the main points of an argument or condense the plot of a story. When you analyze a text, you ask questions about it so that you can offer an interpretation of the text. Analysis is the breaking down of something into its component parts. When that something is a text, the reader is examining different aspects of the text. In a play, for example, the reader might look at the plot, the themes, the characters, the setting, and the dialogue. In a poem, the reader might look at theme, imagery, language (word choice), voice (who is speaking-the poet or someone else), rhythm and structure. Requirements: 2-3 page analysis of your text. Choose a theme, symbol, author’s purpose, text structures, passage structures, etc. 12 font, Times New Roman and double-space the analysis Follow the format of: claim, evidence, explanation all throughout the essay in order to defend your points. Include a clear Thesis that highlights your main points. Your body should have 3 clear points with 2 pieces of evidence for each point. Your conclusion must restate the Thesis and leave the reader with something to think about. You must use in-text citation. Remember, this is the author’s last name and page number inside parentheses. Ex. (Smith 42).
