Why, according to Peter Hayes, did Nazi Germany attempt to exterminate the Jews? Include in your answer:

1) Why did Christian antisemitism emerge and what was its goal?

2) How and why was antisemitism transformed in the 19th Century? Include in your answer a) who coined the term antisemitism and in what ways did he embody the social groups to which antisemitism appealed? and b) What did the term racial hygiene mean and why is it relevant to question two?

3) Why did antisemitism take root more firmly in Germany than in other countries? Include in your answer why World War I was a turning point in the development of German antisemitism.

4) Was Hitler’s antisemitism more important in attracting voters to the Nazi Party or members of the party in the 1920s? Explain.

5) Did the Nazi Government plan to exterminate all the Jews when they gained power in 1933? If not, how did the Nazi Government’s policy toward the Jews evolve?

6) When and why did the Nazi Government’s policy shift from forcing German Jews to emigrate to attempting to exterminate all the Jews in Europe? What practical problems did the Nazi Government have to overcome once it had decided to do this, and what solutions did they develop to solve these problems? Were “ordinary men” mainly responsible for the killing of the Jews in the German-occupied east as Christopher Browning claimed?

Conclude with a summary of the major myths about the Holocaust.
