For this week’s reflection paper, consider the experiences of the students who attended (and still attend) minority serving institutions (such as Historically Black Colleges & Universities (HBCUs), Women’s Colleges, and Tribal Colleges (amongst others).

Using the source materials, consider what you might see as the benefits and drawbacks of attendance at such institutions. What questions do the readings and resources bring up for you about the experiences of those who have historically been excluded from mainstream (read: predominantly white and male) education. Be sure to directly reference this week’s sources.

Readings & Resources on Higher Education for Women: 

• Read Chapter 1 of Women’s Colleges in the United States , which provides an account of the establishment and expansion of women’s colleges in the United States.
• Read Women’s Access and Opportunity – Moore (1987). Moore provides a historical overview of women’s access to higher education.
• Watch the first 8 minutes of the following video, in which Professor Linda Eisenmann discusses the early foundations of higher education for women. In particular, be attentive to the idea of “race suicide.”

• ead “Where We Have Been,” which provides a history of Tribal Colleges in the United States.
• Watch this five-minute discussion of the beginnings of Tribal Colleges in the United States.
