UNIV 104 INFORMATION LITERACY:
ARTICLE EVALUATION
Doing research is not for the faint of heart. It takes careful thought and planning, diligence, and a detective’s mindset.

This assignment will guide you through the steps of locating a credible source for a topic for a pretend paper. You will find an article, evaluate the article, and demonstrate that you can properly cite your article. You MUST use the Jerry Falwell Library for your research. Be sure to watch the videos that are integrated throughout the assignment as they will provide you with valuable information. All yellow boxes must be addressed, and don’t forget to sign your name at the bottom of the assignment.

NOTE- For this activity, you should ultimately find a peer-reviewed article in an academic journal that was published in the last 5 years. Academic articles contain author names, years of publication, pg#s, and so on. You should avoid newspapers, blogs, magazines, websites, and other non-scholarly sources.

STEP 1: Prepare to Search

STEP 2: Locate a Source
Now that you have focused your topic and determined your possible search terms, it is time to locate and evaluate an article. Don’t forget to use the Jerry Falwell Library databases.

STOP!
If your search returned a couple thousand or a few hundred results, that is too many to look through. You must work to narrow your results to focus on the specific aspect of your topic. It’s helpful to start with a broader set of results and then continue to narrow down from the initial results that are returned. Your article must be relevant to your SPECIFIC topic; you don’t want just ANY article that mentions your broad topic.

Step 4: Use the Article

In-Text Citation
Two things to know:
1. A signal phrase is necessary to distinguish between the writer’s thoughts and those of a source (utilized for direct quote, summary, or paraphrase). Reference Entry
