This discussion will be completed in Week 5.
At the end of this activity, you will be able to evaluate the process writing of others for clarity, effectiveness, and tone.
Before you begin, be sure to review the following links from the Excelsior College OWL on making effective discussion board posts and on process writing. Review the elements of effective process essays from:
• Excelsior College Online Writing Lab. (n.d.). Discussion boards (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.. Retrieved from http://owl.excelsior.edu/posts/view/267. • Excelsior College Online Writing Lab. (n.d.). Process (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.. Retrieved from http://owl.excelsior.edu/posts/view/256 For this discussion, you must first locate an example of process writing. This could be from a detailed recipe, a set of instructions, an owner’s manual for a product, or a “how-to” website. Once you locate the piece, your task is to evaluate the writing. If you have a link, be sure to share it.
Respond to the following:
• What process is being described? Are the instructions clear? Would you be able to follow them? • Does the writing work well for its target audience? How do you know? • What would you do to make this process writing more effective? Post your primary response (150 – 200 words). Read any postings already provided by your instructor or fellow students. Read and respond to the conclusions drawn by at least two of your classmates. Remember to read the feedback to your own major postings and reply to it throughout the module.
Your initial post is due by Thursday at 11:59. Your responses are due by Sunday at 11:59 PM.
Consult the Discussion Posting Guide for information about writing your discussion posts. It is recommended that you write your post in a document first. Check your work and correct any spelling or grammatical errors. When you are ready to make your initial post, click on “Reply.” Then copy/paste the text into the message field, and click “Post Reply.”
To respond to a peer, click “Reply” beneath her or his post and continue as with an initial post.
Evaluation
This discussion will be graded using the discussion board rubric. Please review this rubric, located on the Rubrics page within the Start Here module of the course, prior to beginning your work to ensure your participation meets the criteria in place for this discussion. All discussions combined are worth 30% of your final course grade.
