Electronic Health Records (EHRs) are health records of patients stored electronically inform of data. They are recorded by doctors, nurses and other health care providers. Unlike on paper, patient’s details in electronic health records are secure and can be easily accessed. Electronic health records aim at developing a database of patient’s information that can be shared by several departments and health institutions. Electronic health records stores information such as Laboratory tests, billing information and immunization dates. It also contains data about the medical history of a patient, diagnosis, age, gender, and weight.
Electronic Health Records software is a complex system. It requires an expert for installation and skilled staff who can use it efficiently. Computers, laptops, smartphones or tablets are needed to access the server. After Installation, an experienced instructor trains Authorized Health Practitioners on how to run the system. Training may include methods of troubleshooting in case problems crop up.
IT professionals with vast knowledge about information technology manage the software. After examining a patient an authorized health practitioner key in information about the patient on the system. The practitioner should ensure they have included all the information about the patient including the name. Once saved the information can be accessed by other departments such as laboratories and pharmacies. The software is highly secure as only authorized personnel can access it.
Electronic health records are important. They make it easy to access the medical history of patients, secures patient records and provide accurate health details about the patient. Apart from that, they also improve efficiency by promoting connectivity between various departments in hospitals and organizations. This promotes cooperation between various health professionals. They also make it easy to manage medical schedules for the patient.

Electronic health records have several disadvantages. Institutions that use it must include managerial cost, ensure availability of electricity and seek expert support from information technology professionals. The system can also crash. In this case, the hospital is likely to lose the data of the patients. Therefore, it is important to have a backup in case the system crashes.
Electronic health records make work easy by enabling access to accurate and well-organized patient data. They also improve the delivery of quality health care by improving coordination between various health professionals. This is because health care professionals can access all the information about the patient on electronic health records.
