Motivation is described as a process that is used to guide, enhance, and offer guidance in order to encourage human behavior toward a common objective (Organizational Behavior) (Kinsey, 2020). In an ideal day, every professional would complete their tasks flawlessly, with no mistakes or missed deadlines. But unfortunately, we all have days when motivation is lacking and duties feel like an uphill. However, there are several motivational theories that employers can use to inspire and get the most out of their employees.
As a current serving member of the United States Army, motivation is especially very crucial to me and my team members especially due to the nature of work environment we undergo through both during training and deployment. According to Herzberg’s two factor theory, employee satisfaction and dissatisfaction is purely dependent on the two factors; motivator factors and hygiene factors (“Motivation Theories [5 Famous Motivation Theories]”, 2022). Motivator factors simply refers to work factors that lead to satisfaction and increased motivation, often brought by the work accomplishments and the opportunity to advance. In this regard, the motivation to rise up through the ranks, in my military career has driven me to achieving great feats as a drill sergeant. Even more, by pursuing this degree in Small groups Management, I hope to become an effective leader both in the military and professionally. On the other hand, hygiene factors can largely be attributed to risky working conditions, compensation, conflicts among employees, all of which have created a fair share of challenges as well. The risk involved with being on the military is the major concern in my case but the motivating factors outweigh such factors.
The second theory of motivation that I resonate with closely is the Vroom’s Theory of Expectancy which postulates that a person’s motivation is directly affected by their expectation about the future. According to this theory, motivation is directly reflected by Expectancy (E), Instrumentality (I), and Valence, where: Expectancy refers to the belief that increased effort will obviously result in increased performance with all factors remaining constant. Instrumentality on the other hand describes the belief that if you perform a good job, then the reward will also be valuable. Similarly, Valence dictates how much value an individual places upon a certain outcome (Kinsey, 2020). A combination of these three can be reflected in my military career and also my personal life. Multitasking between bringing up a 7 year old daughter alongside studying and most of all attending to my military duties is especially challenging requiring me to prioritize and evaluate the importance of each duties and decide on which to carry out during what time. However, this has not being without challenges. Having to balance between these factors has not been without challenges but using Vroom’s Theory, I can comfortably maneuver and effectively handle every duty with attention and success.
Using these two theories, I believe that both employers and employees can improve the workplace collaboratively. In the military career, improving the personnel standards, compensation, and safety can increase the team and individual motivation levels significantly, leading achieving the service obligations and objectives. As such, by taking additional studies in management, I am confident that I will achieve leadership skills which will optimize my career goals as well as give me the required skills to manage teams later in my career path.
