During the World War II (1939-45), the world first deployed atomic bomb was dropped by an American B-29 bomber on August 6, 1945, over Japanese City of Hiroshima. About 90% of the city was wiped out by the explosion, and 80,000 people were killed instantly; tens of thousands later died due to exposure to radiations. Three days after, another bomb was dropped on Nagasaki by a second B-29 killing around 40,000 people. On 15th August, Hirohito, Japanese Emperor, announced in a radio address about his unconditional surrender in World War II quoting the destroying power of the cruelest bomb. However, this event made a great impact in the world history due to its consequences. Therefore, this paper will discuss the reasons this event is put in historical context and why New Americans citizens should learn about it.
The first reason why the event was put in historical context is that it took place during the time World War II was ongoing in 1945 which was the most deadly event in the human history. This event also represented the only time in history nuclear weapons were used in war by the United States till date. Additionally, it is through this bombing that Japanese were made to unconditionally surrender leading to the end of World War II which was the biggest turning point in history.
Also, Hiroshima one of the destroyed part was put as a historical reminder of the Atomic bomb. There is an atomic bomb dome which is built at Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park that commemorates those who lost their lives in the bombing. On 6th August of every year, people gather at this Peace Memorial Park to join in interfaith religious services to honor the anniversary of the bombing, thus, a significant event in the write my paper in history.
It is important for the new citizens of America to learn about this event because, by looking at the contamination caused by the bombing, massive destruction, and people suffering from the attacks on Nagasaki and Hiroshima it will have a broader impact on deterring warring nations from using nuclear weapons again once they become aware of their terrible consequences. For instance, if new citizens are not aware of the consequences of using nuclear weapons they might end up trying them again. However, if they learn about this event, they will be aware and also learn that after the bombing led to the end of the World War II, the Cold war started and 60 years passed without the use of nuclear weapons. This means people during that time learned a big lesson from the bombing, and so it should be with the new citizens.
Secondly, new American citizens should learn about the bombing so that they can use the anniversary as a reminder that war often escalates far beyond people expectations; conflicts that might look predictable and fairly manageable might result into a far more entrenched and violent war. It will also help them understand that even though war sometimes is necessary, the principle of restraint is essential in avoiding unnecessary military engagement. For instance, the use of nuclear weapons to make Japan Surrender unconditionally resulted in one of the worst destruction in history. Therefore, nuclear weapons will never be the best solution just the same way there will be no ethical justification for using them whether labeled as an act of direct assault or psychological warfare.
In conclusion, the atomic bombing of Japanese by the United States was of great importance in the American history. The historical record gives details on how it was major destruction that affected both human beings and the environment of the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. However, it led to Japanese surrendering on the World War II, which marked its end. As outlined in this essay, this event is of great importance for new American Citizens to learn about it because knowing the consequences will help them have a different perspective on how to handle such occurrences in future.
