The civil war between the southern states and the northern states began at around April 1861 when the Union soldiers were bombarded by Confederate warships at Fort Sumter, a place in South Carolina. The last part of the American civil war was fought in Texas at Palmito Ranch in 1865, where the Northern states emerged victorious (Donald, Current, 1960). Indeed, the victory was subject to a number of factors.
For instance, the southern states were known to be hard core supporters of slavery which most states frowned at as most people considered ethical issues more important, this led to the northern states getting more support in terms of economic endowment as well as huge enrolment of the northern population in the military.
Slaves who were very keen towards an end in slavery also joined the Union side; this gave the north an upper hand. Furthermore, the population of the northern states being about 22 million people was much greater than the south, 9 million people, making the northern army to outnumber the Southern one in strength.
The northern region had more industries than the south which kept it at a better position in terms of availability of resources, weapons and food needed for the war. They also had an excellent infrastructural network including railroad links and managed to take control of the southern ports forcing people inland which gave them monopoly over the region.
This blocked the Confederate from getting support from Europe and also ended the flourish of the southern cotton trade. More important, the Union had a well-functioning government which was cohesively organized and got international support.
This was due to President Lincoln’s call for international support to the north due to its moral diplomacy (Gallagher, 2011). A major hit back to the south was the death of their leader, Stonewall Jackson, who was a source of inspiration. It weakened their morale and brought in more confusion in the south. Hence, the Union emerged victorious despite some advantages that the Confederate had.
