The Chicago World Fair
The Chicago World Fair in 1893 was a reflection the Gilded age America. It showcased the capabilities of the country in future. The series of events in the Chicago World Fair in 1893 established the role of America as a superpower in the world. Overcoming the many obstacles which came up during the building of the exposition was a success to the architect, Daniel Burnham.
Reflecting on the 1893 exposition, America stood out as a conquerer of hardships. For instance, the untimely death of John Root who assisted in architectural work and injuries of workers challenges Daniel Burnham (Larson 9). Before the Gilded era, the country had been economic depression and great ruin which had caused a lot of loss to the citizens. This had made the country lose its ability in economy and politics. These events were a lesson to the American people to have patience and be persistent.
Additionally, Chicago World Fair proved that America had great power. The architectural plan of the fair manifested the intelligence of the American people. Opening the fair even before the finish of the Ferris wheel was a sign of determination in completing the construction and at the same time holding the exposition (Larson 16). This depicted the power that Chicago had and being one of America’s cities, it painted a picture of America’s power.
Furthermore, the events of the 1893 Chicago exposition reflected one of the American values that failure is not an alternative. During the construction, Daniel clearly understood that if the fair did not work out, the reputation of America would be flawed (Larson 33). With this in mind, he had to look for possible solutions for all the challenges which came along the way. As a result, the exposition succeeded and brought America international fame.
