By this point in the course, you should have a sense of how history is interpreted, reinterpreted and, in a sense, created. It is not so much a set of static facts and dates as it is a constant reevaluation based on new sources and new ways of looking at existing sources, influenced by our present-day assumptions and concerns. In this light, we will examine the popular musical Hamilton. Although it is not a scholarly source like a journal article or monograph written by a historian, the musical is an interpretation of the past, based on source material, and it can give us some insight into how the revolutionary era is presented to the public, through popular culture. Should the musical be considered a serious interpretation of history? Why or why not? What do you make of Isenberg’s arguments? What difficulties are there in the relationship between scholarly history and popular history? Can these be overcome, and if so, how? Feel free to reference your research in your M4A1: War Movie project as appropriate. What does it mean that a musical about our nation’s founding is so popular? What does it tell you about Americans’ view of our own history and founding?
