Tactical criminal analysis as a tool for crime investigation deals with abrupt affronts to promote a quick answer to dire situations. Collection of information is a priority and as such, the type of information being collected needs to be specified and understood. Information is critical in providing great help to personnel in the field identify crime, discover trends and ultimately work to arrest criminal offenders. As such, one of the main point that I gathered within this brief interview is the importance of information identification and collection to achieve better response time to criminal activities. Professor Cliff Aguiar points out an important detail that I found to resonate with tactical crime analysis in order to achieve quick response time. He identifies that all information within a crime scene however minute is necessary information. Robust analysis should take into account that analysis can be found across agencies and information sharing and collaboration helps boost investigation.
I do agree strongly on the need for interagency cooperation to achieve better analysis and response time. Cooperation allows different fields to understand the meaning of the information. Aguiar further identifies using his own experience that a mobile phone that was thought to be very irrelevant to the case, was actually the factor that helped them evaluate the crime scene to fruition. As such, information’s relevance transverses through time and while it may not immediately be regarded as important, with time, it may gain prominence and become a key piece of the puzzle. This is one of the most important factors that he mentioned that I tend to agree with especially when he emphasized on the need to inter and interagency collaboration to achieve tactical crime analysis. Aguiar identifies that within the contemporary society, centralized platforms, and communication is also an important factor in information collection and interpretation. Specifying that information in one agency can be useless but this may not be the case elsewhere. It is only through collaboration that such information becomes useful and key in understanding the case at hand.
While information is useful and needs to be collected, not all information might be useful and there needs to be constant training to achieve this. Gottlieb and Arenberg (1992) cite that clutter does not improve readability. It makes it even harder to connect the dots as it frustrates the analysts with information that may not be useful and hinder their understanding of a case. On the contrary, the collaboration can solve the problems of information overload. This is because it divides the work across a multiple section of the agency and allows a wider resource base to be utilized at a lower cost and saves time generally.
Communication between agencies (inter and intra) is what I would identify as a main issue facing policing and analysis. Aguiar identifies that indeed better inter and intra-agency communication has bee key in allowing better organizational development. It has worked to boos collaboration and officer morale. He states that officers should not try to hide their work but collaborate with others to “go global.” As such, creating a communication system that includes all members becomes important in analysis and investigation and shortening the response time. This is because it boosts confidence and teamwork and is also easy to train and follow close and newer global trends for better criminal investigation.
