Simeon Wright, who is the main author of this books was a pipe fitter who later turned to be a renowned human rights activist. On the other hand, Herb Boyd was a journalist who wrote the story. In addition, Jonathan Hahn was a renowned publisher who published the book.
What the Article is About
This is a tragic story that involves a confession by Simeon Wright, who witnessed the death of his own cousin Emmett . The incident happened in 1955 when Emmett Till and his cousin Parker Jr. were visiting Simeon family. In the company of other cousins and friends the two boys went into a grocery that was owned by a white lady known as Carolyn Bryant together with her husband Roy Bryant and Emmett whistled at her .
During that time, there was a lot of segregation between the blacks and whites and therefore the boys decided to keep quiet about the incident because it was considered a serious issue at that time. However, on august 28, Roy Bryant visited Wright home in the company of his half brother and they terrorized his family and they kidnapped Emmett.
After taking away Emmett, they beat him up, shot him dead and dumped him in the river that was known as Tallahatchie. Later on, the Bryant and his half brother were arrested and taken to court to stand trial for murder. However, the two were acquitted by the jury that comprised of white people, but they later confessed that they committed the offense in Look magazine. The death of Emmett ignited civil rights movement in order to fight for equality .
