Sequence for data link protocols are essential as they aid in error control. Mechanisms such as stop and wait, go-back-n, and selective repeat are used to detect errors as packets move across a network. Collectively, these techniques are known as Automatic Repeat Request (ARQ) due to their nature of functioning (Banzal, 2007). Stop and wait is a protocol that acts by a sender and receiver sending packets and waiting for acknowledgements to manage flow control. Once a user sends a packet, they wait for an acknowledgement from the receiver before sending the next packet. In case there is a lack of acknowledgement, the user has to resend the packet again. Go-Back-N protocol works in a similar manner to Stop and Wait but in this scenario cumulative n-frames are sent to the receiver who has to send cumulative n-acknowledgements to show they have received the packets. Lastly, the selective repeat protocol builds up on a rather familiar Go-Back-N protocol. Again, the sender has to transmit n-frames to the receiver who then has to send back n-acknowledgements. However, in this case, the receiver has a buffer of lost packets so that the sender can only transmit those frames that were lost. Sequence numbers act as identification numbers for packets as they move from the sender to the receiver. It is important to use sequence numbers in acknowledge frames since each number represents the frame that was received. It is therefore relatively easy to track lost token and resend them. Sequence numbers also aid in rearranging the frames in the order in which they were sent.
