Selecting a Cloud-Based Vendor – Server Solutions

Selecting a Cloud-Based Vendor – Server Solutions
VMware provides virtualization and cloud infrastructure solutions for companies, allowing end-users to access applications from any device, which boosts productivity while ensuring continuous security protection. Since data back-up is an essential requirement that helps preserve data authenticity in the event of a disaster, VM replication also comes in as an added requirement. The VM replication process makes a copy of the VM onto another host, which comes in handy in the event of VMware host crash and also helps in improving resource utilization (Ding, Ghansah & Yanya 2015 – Research Paper Writing Help Service, p.192). With replication, one is able to set a recovery point objective (RPO) with a defined interval specific to the company’s data protection need that occurs periodically. This applies changes to all the virtual machines that are configured for replication at source to their target host site. Usually, for configuration to happen the source and target sites must be powered on; the source is then switched off for data synchronization to take place, which completes the replication process.
Desktop virtualization provides relatively affordable streamlined approaches towards delivery, security, and management of desktops and applications; for organizations, ensuring end-users can work remotely across any device. While this method of virtualization offers a plethora of benefits, its deployment typically takes the shape of different deployment models (Scroggins, 2013). These models include making the use of Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI), Remote Desktop Services (RDS) or Desktop-as-a-service (DaaS). VDI is usually the most preferred method as it offers a virtualized version of a familiar computing model; however, the model requires the user to manage all aspects of their infrastructure, which include hardware, operating systems, applications, and all software. That can be quite challenging since most people do not possess VDI experience. Additionally, VDI requires a large investment, which makes its deployment a hard decision to make. This goes to show that the deployment of desktop solutions is harder than the replication of server solutions.
When deploying a certain number of solutions on a physical host, certain requirements need to be met. Firstly, the management domain needs to have a minimum of four servers. This provides adequate resources, which increases availability for a certain number of solutions and also provides more resources for additional workloads (Scroggins, 2013). Secondly, the CPU must have a certain number of cores and, if possible, a high clock speed, which allows the user to receive better consolidation depending on what the workload demands. Also, CPU’s with large internal catches are better. Thirdly, depending on the number of solutions being deployed, it is recommended that the minimum memory capacity be 96GB to ensure smooth performance and easier consolidation. Another minimum requirement is having an adequate bandwidth with the most recommended one being a quad-port NIC. The solutions must also be ones that serve the user’s needs to prevent wastage of time and memory space.
On the other hand, virtual machines must satisfy maximums of 1TB RAM, a computation CPU capacity of 64 and video memory of up to 512MB, among other requirements. With these requirements in mind, it is paramount to note that a single vCenter Server instance can support a maximum of 1000 hosts. If powered-on virtual machines, the figure goes up to 10000 and 15000 if they are registered virtual machines (Závacký, Eliáš & Stémy, 2015 – Research Paper Writing Help Service). The vCenter relies on a vCenter server database, managed hosts, a VSphere Client, and a vCenter Single Sign-On. This enables one to manage infrastructure from a centralized location.
