Rogerian Theory Application (Question 1): Alverez Family summary

Rogerian Theory Application
(Question 1): Alverez Family summary
Alverez Family is going through a transition that is disrupting the normal relationships in the family. The transition is taking place at a time when Ray suffering a stroke. His wife feels indebted to take care of Ray and would regret to take him to a care center. In addition, Jean is assisted by their two of their four children to take care of Ray. The family has lived harmoniously except for the various changes they have encountered. Ray worked with a company for over 30 years. He was an alcoholic, but he joined the Alcohol Anonymous meeting and finally, he stopped drinking. Ray is verbally abusive when the grandchildren are noisy and his movement is painful. Jean has been at home taking care of the children. Marge the last born is in prison for being in possession of cocaine. Marge’s son Jason lives with the other family members. Jason has been undisciplined and has been arrested with cases of theft. Miranda is concerned with the situation at home. She knows the mother cannot do all the work sufficiently.
(Question 2): Theoretical Approach
The Rogerian theory was coined by Carl Rogers. The person-centered therapy is named after Carl Rogers who coined it in the 1940s (Margolin, 102). The theory states that a social worker is not always the expert in the process of helping clients. Carl Rogers diverted from the traditional view and suggested that every human being has the potential to fulfill their potential. Therefore, the role of a therapist in the therapy session is to motivate and empower a client to use their potential. Previously, theories viewed people as inherently flawed. However, the Rogerian theory argues that every person has a desire and a capacity to initiate personal growth. Human beings have the ability to alter their attitudes, concepts, and behaviors. A therapist in the Rogerian theory will not lead the way but will follow where the clients lead (Ioane and Keith, 290). The role of a therapist is to offer support to the client to help them realize personalized solutions to their personal problems. The theory has influenced other disciplined apart from counseling including medicine and education.
(Question 3): Rogerian Theory Application
Rogerian theory can be used appropriately to address the issues in the Alverez Family. The theory is relevant to people who are suffering from grief, anxiety, stress, and depression (Washburn and Melanie, 411). As a counselor, it will be my duty to support the family members as they find personalized solutions. The personalized solutions will be for the whole family and individuals including Ray, Jean, Marge, Maranda, and Jason. As a family service agency, it will be my duty to listen to all the members as they narrate their story without judging them (Margolin, 93). The process of listening to the individuals will involve developing solutions for the family that seems unbearable. It will involve accepting the thoughts and feelings of the family members (Washburn and Melanie, 412). The people who may express their thoughts and feelings include Jean, Maranda, and Ray. The reason is that they have been in different types of stress and anxiety. Additionally, I will not present any authority in the process of the counseling sessions (Edvardsson et al, 225). I will ensure the family members view me as a source of an honest and transparent individual who can show empathic understanding.
(Question 4): Preparation Stage
The preparation stage before meeting the family will involve developing questions that will help gain more information about the family. A list of questions will help understand the family and the individuals (Washburn and Melanie, 413). The questions should contain prompts that will trigger the members to indicate the solutions to their problems. Additionally, chaos may arise during a family therapy. It will be important to prepare how to deal with the chaos or other unexpected moments. The preparation stage will involve developing strategies on how to create a therapeutic alliance. If the chaos arise or the clients resist treatment, it will be important to prepare how to handle the resistance (Ioane and Keith, 293). The various strategies for preparing for the marriage include being on time, actively listening to every person, being flexible with the family schedule and ensuring every person’s voice is heard. Therefore, the preparation stage will ensure all the elements of the session are in place before the meeting time (Lewis 170). Finally, it will be important to prepare to allow the individuals to ask questions, comments or raise issues regarding the family condition.
(Question 5): First Meeting
The first session will involve all the family members. All the members will introduce themselves. I will introduce myself as a social worker and my role in supporting the family to make good choices (Ioane and Keith, 292). It will comprise of setting the stage through building a rapport. The location will be a comfortable environment that is serene for the clients to open up. One of the best options is my office space. The office seating arrangement can be reorganized to make the clients feel comfortable (Margolin, 93). I would introduce myself as a social worker and explain to the clients my role in the therapy session. I would highlight the role of my agency and the scope of work. The first session would involve multidisciplinary members who will help a person like Ray with his health issues.
