The Davies Awards acknowledges the utilization of technology by healthcare organizations to considerably enhance the delivery of clinical care, the outcomes of patients and the health of the population across the globe (HIMSS davies award of excellence, 2020). Having the Davies Awards is advantageous for several reasons. For instance, these awards can help a healthcare organization to get more funds to carry out its mandate. The organization is also able to get assistance on how to effectively use technology in healthcare to enhance patient care quality, and how to enhance the safety of patients and increase income (HIMSS davies award of excellence, 2020). Another benefit pertains to celebrating success with acknowledgement through the channels of HIMSS. Last but not least, the awards will help an organization to realize a new viewpoint on its growth. The Davies Awards are obtained through application. If a healthcare organization falls within the categories of types of organizations eligible for the Awards, it is required to have met several industry milestones. As such, the organizations should have attained Stage seven on one of the HIMSS Analytics Maturity Models, used information technology to attain sustainable improvement to population health and clinical care outcomes, and illustrate the benefit of public health that is attributable to IT application (HIMSS davies award of excellence, 2020).
The awardees are described as follows:

• Truman Medical Centers (Kansas City, MO, U.S.)-provides the biggest inpatient and outpatient care in Kansas City.
• Yale New Haven Health (New Haven, CT, U.S.)-offers a wide range of medical services using various techniques, technologies and treatments.
The case study pertains to St. Stephens Hospital, Australia. The vision of EHR is to change the delivery of healthcare by developing shared records of patients that are the main source of information for healthcare providers so as to enhance patient safety and outcomes as well as decrease medical errors. In this case, St Stephens used this technology to enhance patient outcomes. As such, it used health information and technology to enhance access of data through an environment that is integrated, lessen the variance in administration of medication and decrease length of stays (LOS) for patients in orthopaedics (Health information and technology standardization case studies, 2020).
The case study presents several clinical applications. St. Stephens applied the use of EHR in administering medication. As such, healthcare professionals in the facility increasingly adopted the use of the digital physician order entry and the bar code in administering drugs, which eventually led to a reduction in unfavourable drug side effects and omissions of medication. St. Stephens introduced a scalable platform aimed at meeting the requirement for device connectivity. This served to enhance data access. Lastly, the hospital applied the utilization of healthcare data analytics to assist in identifying the best chance for improving services provided to orthopedic population.
The awardees got several benefits. For instance, each of them got a financial award. This means that each got additional funding to scale-up their activities. They also received additional training on how to continue to use technology to improve their services. The recognition was also a benefit. Their efforts in leveraging the use of technology were recognized and this served as an encouragement for them to focus on further growth.
In this case, the awardees in focus are King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre and St. Stephens. One similarity between these two organizations is that both focused on enhancing data access in almost real time with the goal of enhancing documentation efficiencies and improving the experience of patients, thus meeting the criteria for winning an award. Another similarity relates to length of stay. In seeking to enhance data access, both hospitals also ended up decreasing the LOS for some of their patients, which is a goal for healthcare technology. King Faisal saw the length of stay for its patients decrease from 33 days to 30 days (HIMSS, 2020). St. Stephens saw a decline in LOS for its orthopedic patients. Lastly, both hospitals designed areas with full integration of EHR, medical gadgets at patients’ bedside, and other high technology tools to bolster involvement of patients and conduct education on individual care. This is a clear demonstration of them leveraging the use of healthcare technology thus leading them to win.
