In this unit, students will continue honing their understanding and use of different genres, as well as their mastery of MLA formatting and standards. They will work with readings from a variety of genres about the ideal of the American Dream, juxtaposed against the reality mirrored in issues predominant in our American society and culture in 2017. The national issues permeating our culture, paired with the reading students will be doing, will allow them to begin forming their own idea platforms and topics for research. Students will select three issues of significant importance to our country and research different genres in which these issues are presented. They will explore analytically the content of the various sources they use in their research and discern how the various authors present their arguments/analysis to the reader in a variety of genres. Choose six out the eight articles to read online; 1. “Harlem” 2. “Mexican is Not a Noun” 3. “Dulce et Decorum Est” 4. The Declaration of Independence” 5. I Have a Dream” 6. “Big Black Good Man” 7. “New York Day Woman” 8. “Patterns” Major Writing Assignment #2 Topic • Choose three areas of problems in America and then choose two works representing each area (6 works minimum). • Discuss how these works reflect concerns and ideas of each area. • Use quotes substantially to support your ideas.
