I agree with the findings that Moralistic Therapeutic Deism is an accurate representation of today’s society. Of the five points that were given, the two that stand out the most to me are numbers three and four. The third point states that the central goal in life is to be happy and feel good about oneself. Kids used to want to be astronauts, firemen, policemen, and lawyers. They wanted to explore and help their neighbors and improve life for the entire world. Today, kids want to be actors and businessmen. They want to make the big bucks so they can live in the biggest houses, drive the fastest cars, be the most recognizable people anywhere they go. They don’t care how they get there, whose necks they have to step on or what the trade-offs are. They are totally selfish. It used to be if you invited your neighbors over once a week for dinner and now it is so common to not know who your neighbors are, let alone help them if they needed it. Even if they did ask, people immediately demand payment and recognition for it. I know that not everyone is like this. The truth is that the number of people who do not fit this description is far smaller than the number of people who follow the “way of Mammon.” Point number four of the list states that God does not need to be particularly involved in one’s life except when God is needed to resolve a problem. In our mad rush to speed through life in order to get the next best thing to make us happy, we often don’t take the time to stop and think about any of our blessings. The only time we do take notice of our blessings is when one or more of them is debilitated or taken away. Sometimes the cause is an accident and at different times it’s because of some person who takes their aggression and hurt out on others, as in the cases of the school shootings. It is then that we cry out to God and show mercy to our fellow neighbors of this planet. This usually doesn’t last long because only those immediately affected by these tragedies are awakened to life outside of their immediate spheres of influence. The ones that are not affected demand that their tasks be carried out straight away and if it isn’t you, they have no problem replacing you
