Positive and Negative Reinforcement
According to Martella et al (2011) there is the need to put focus on negative reinforcement, and positive reinforcement. As such, the behavior that is encouraged tends to be repeated (that is, strengthened); behavior that is not reinforced has the tendency of dying out-or being extinguished (that is, weakened). Notably, positive reinforcement rewards good conduct for a wrong doer instead of punishment. For this reason, the reward supports the behavior as the offender connects the 2 together as one. By getting rid of negative conduct as in the case of negative reinforcement, a certain conduct is strengthened. Negative reinforcement removes an unfavorable feeling or circumstance that is rewarding to the offender. As such, negative reinforcement reinforces behavior as it gets rid of an unwanted experience.
In this case, as the police officer who has been called to the scene, I can utilize both positive and negative reinforcement. With regard to positive reinforcement, I would begin by ensuring that every student at the party is okay. Notably, I had received information that one of the students at the party was seen getting sick and vomiting. I would then reprimand them for the bad behavior that they have demonstrated. I would also lecture them on the negative consequences their behaviors since they skipped school to attend a party, and in the process, also engaged in drug use. With regard to negative reinforcement, I would take all the students at the party to the police station and lock them up. I would then call each of their parents/guardians and inform them of the occurrence. This way, they will be discouraged from engaging in such behavior in the future because of the fear of being locked up.
