Personal Theoretical Framework for Advanced Practice Nursing

Personal Theoretical Framework for Advanced Practice Nursing
Introduction
Advanced practice nursing involves the application of nursing philosophies to promote healthy patient outcomes. One of the elements of nursing philosophy is holistic care. The nursing philosophy is essential in delivering care since it helps nurses reflect and evaluate their actions in the healthcare delivery process. My nursing philosophy involves holistic care, compassion, and professional care. The three pillars are critical in delivering care to patients with diverse healthcare issues. The nursing philosophy is similar to Watson’s theory of human caring. The theory has four major components: health, human being, environment or society, and nursing care. Watson’s theory of human caring focuses more on the psychological perspective than the physical delivery of care. One of the theory’s weaknesses is that it focuses less on the biopsychosocial elements of care. One of the strengths of the theory is that it encourages nurses to take care of their mental wellness as they provide care. The purpose of the paper is to examine the nursing philosophy and theoretical framework in care delivery.
Nursing Philosophy
The nursing philosophy is based on principles, values, and personal beliefs. It outlines the mission statement, values, and beliefs in the process of interacting with patients. The foundation of my nursing philosophy is to provide quality care to patients. The provision of patient-centered care is critical for the delivery of professional and evidence-based care (Cheraghi et al., 2019: 2024 – Online Assignment Homework Writing Help Service By Expert Research Writers). The first nursing principle is the provision of holistic care to patients. It is essential to address the mental, physical, and psychological well-being of a patient. The philosophy’s first component is providing holistic care to patients. Holistic care considers the patient medical history, contributing factors, the environment, and the predisposing factors (Cheraghi et al., 2019: 2024 – Online Assignment Homework Writing Help Service By Expert Research Writers). For instance, patients with a history of domestic violence are likely to experience physical harm and mental illness. It is vital to address the risk factors such as domestic violence that put individuals at risk of harm. Delivering holistic care involves collaborating with other healthcare workers, such as social workers, to help patients at risk of domestic violence.
Another important consideration is that holistic care results from behavior change among patients. Changing patients’ behavior results in quality health (Bender, 2018: 2024 – Write My Essay For Me | Essay Writing Service For Your Papers Online). One of the essential components in the delivery of care is patient education to foster behavior change. The patient is critical for patients with negative behavior that puts them at risk of diseases. For instance, smoking is a social activity but increases lung cancer risk (Bender, 2018: 2024 – Write My Essay For Me | Essay Writing Service For Your Papers Online). Other behavioral issues that require patient education include lifestyle, eating habits, drug and substance, and alcohol abuse. Educating patients or referring them to counselors is critical in providing holistic care.
The second element of my nursing philosophy is compassion. I strive to express compassion toward all patients undergoing physical, emotional, or mental challenges. Compassion is vital in caring for patients with love, patience, and sensitivity (Straughair, 2019: 2024 – Online Assignment Homework Writing Help Service By Expert Research Writers). Nursing is an activity that requires compassion since it demonstrates the sincerity of the healthcare worker. When patients realize that a nurse is compassionate, they will respond with trust and satisfaction. For instance, compassion is required when addressing patients undergoing mental problems due to a history of drug and substance abuse (Straughair, 2019: 2024 – Online Assignment Homework Writing Help Service By Expert Research Writers). Patients may struggle for months to quit the drugs, a journey that will require compassion. The patience and confidence of a nurse will motivate a patient to strive to quit their negative behavior.
The last component of my nursing philosophy is personal beliefs in a nurse’s competence. Professional skills are needed to deliver care (Essenmacher et al., 2022). Nurses must play different roles such as an advocate, manager, educator, and healthcare provider. Competency comes from continuous learning. For instance, while treating a patient with diabetes or paralysis, nurses need to walk with the patient through the recovery journey. Competency is needed in assessing the patient’s needs, determining the changes, and evaluating the progress and way forward (Essenmacher et al., 2022). For example, during the Covid-19, it was critical to assist the patients from admission to the point of assessing their vitals until discharge. Patient educators’ role is vital since it can play a preventative role in care delivery. Healthcare workers need the knowledge to educate patients on behavior change and medication adherence to promote patient quality outcomes.
The nursing philosophy ascribes to the principles of Florence Nightingale’s philosophy and teachings (Riegel et al., 2021). The philosophy argues that nurses should use their hearts, hands, and mind to create an enabling environment to promote quality patient outcomes (Riegel et al., 2021). Demonstrating compassion and professionalism is critical in providing patient-centered care. The nursing philosophy is essential in delivering care since it helps nurses reflect and evaluate their actions in the healthcare delivery process.
Theoretical Framework and Nursing Philosophy
Jean Watson developed the theory of human caring between 1975 and 1979. The theory was derived from personal views and background in nursing (Gunawan et al., 2022). The theory has four major components: health, human being, environment or society, and nursing care. One of its objectives of Watson was to distinguish nursing as an independent entity in medical practice (Gunawan et al., 2022). Watson’s theory is essential in nursing since it focuses on compassion to ease patient suffering and expand healthcare to promote nurses’ actualization.
The theoretical framework that fits my philosophy is Watson’s theory. The theory comprises the healthcare delivery process and the need for holistic care, such as the mental and physical wellness of the patients (Wei & Watson, 2019: 2024 – Online Assignment Homework Writing Help Service By Expert Research Writers). For instance, it advocates for a full spectrum of care for all patients. It shows the importance of holistic assessment to determine the patient’s needs and provide quality care. The theory advocates the need to demonstrate the professional skills of the nurses (Wei & Watson, 2019: 2024 – Online Assignment Homework Writing Help Service By Expert Research Writers). It advocates for a healthy and robust relationship with the patients to provide opportunities for the delivery of quality care. The professional skills include the educative role of the nurses to change the behavior of the patients and foster healthy patient outcomes. Patient education is critical in preventing the deterioration of the patients’ health conditions (Riegel et al., 2021). Therefore, all aspects of the theoretical framework align with the nursing philosophy.
One of the connections between the theory and the nursing philosophy is that nurses should assess the causative factors. The human caring theory states that patients need holistic care to achieve health milestones. Causative factors could be drugs and substance abuse, a violent environment, or a poor lifestyle (Riegel et al., 2021). For instance, some health problems cannot be addressed without addressing the causative factors. Research shows that most patients who have diabetes have poor eating habits and lifestyles (Straughair, 2019: 2024 – Online Assignment Homework Writing Help Service By Expert Research Writers). To address the rising cases of diabetes, it will be essential to educate the patients about healthy lifestyles such as regular exercise, eating healthy foods and avoiding junk food, adhering to medication, and getting a regular medical assessment.
The theory emphasizes that an individual’s environment is essential in determining their health outcomes. For instance, homeless people are at risk of various illnesses due to exposure to cold, lack of proper sanitation, and medical checkup (Gunawan et al., 2022). Patients living on stress are at risk of mental illness due to stress of attacks on the streets. Other problems include poor nutrition due to a lack of a balanced diet (Gunawan et al., 2022). The theory and the nursing philosophy have a strong connection due to the relationship between health outcomes and the environment.
Watson’s theory of human caring compares with the nursing philosophy since they both encourage compassionate care. The theories emphasize the need to provide quality care using gentleness, love, kindness, and mercy towards the patient (Gunawan et al., 2022). The caring element is two ways since it encourages care for the nurse and the patient. One of the strengths of the theory is that it encourages nurses to take care of their mental wellness as they provide care. The theory can be used in delivering care in the current healthcare environment where nurses are exposed to burnout and fatigue (Wei & Watson, 2019: 2024 – Online Assignment Homework Writing Help Service By Expert Research Writers). Studies show that the risk of fatigue and burnout is common among nurses, especially during the pandemic (Wei & Watson, 2019: 2024 – Online Assignment Homework Writing Help Service By Expert Research Writers). The theory encourages nurses to prioritize personal care to be ready to extend compassion to others.
The theory and nursing philosophy have some similarities since the theory encourages competency in care delivery. The theory proposes incorporating different aspects of care such as family, culture, patient’s context, and community (Wei & Watson, 2019: 2024 – Online Assignment Homework Writing Help Service By Expert Research Writers). Competency in the nursing philosophy is essential since it encourages nurses to embrace professionalism (Essenmacher et al., 2022). For instance, nurses require continuous education to empower them to achieve quality patient outcomes. Nurses need to embrace evidence-based practices through continuous learning exercises.
Possible Situation
Watson’s theory and the nursing philosophy have a slight difference. One of the areas the theory and the philosophy do not fit is that the nursing philosophy focuses on the post and pre-operative medical practices (Essenmacher et al., 2022). The theory focuses on the post-operative practices that involve practices after care delivery. For instance, the theory focuses on patient education to enhance adherence to medication (Gunawan et al., 2022). The slight difference shows that the philosophy takes a holistic approach to caring for patients from the initial stages to the discharge and follow-up.
The second aspect is that Watson’s theory focuses on a patient’s psycho-social condition, not the patient’s psycho-social and physical health. The theory focuses less on the patients’ biopsychosocial needs (Gunawan et al., 2022). The framework focuses on the need to improve the psycho-social as the source of improving a patient’s general health and preventing deterioration of the patient’s condition. However, the nursing philosophy focuses on holistic care, including the mental and physical aspects (Wei & Watson, 2019: 2024 – Online Assignment Homework Writing Help Service By Expert Research Writers). The framework cannot be used in caring for patients with diverse mental and emotional health issues affecting their physical health. For instance, patients with depression are at risk of suicidal thoughts, which can expose them to physical harm or death. The framework has various limitations in terms of application, unlike the philosophy, which can be applied in diverse situations in the healthcare environment.
The focus of Watson’s theory of human caring is on the patients’ spirit or psychological needs. The theory is less applicable in the therapeutic interventions to help patients with various mental health issues (Wei & Watson, 2019: 2024 – Online Assignment Homework Writing Help Service By Expert Research Writers). It is important to note that theory cannot fit into delivering care for patients suffering from physical and mental illnesses. For instance, patients with obesity are at a higher risk of depression, especially due to discrimination. Healthcare workers need to utilize a more progressive theory to understand the dynamics of addressing physical and psychological healthcare issues affecting patients.
Conclusion
Nurses strive to blend their nursing philosophy with the theoretical framework. The objective is to provide seamless care to patients with diverse healthcare issues. The elements of my nursing philosophy are holistic care, compassion, and professional care. Comparatively, it has four major components, including health, human being, environment or society, and nursing care. The pillars of my personal nursing philosophy are critical in providing patient-centered and evidence-based care. Holistic care involves providing care and addressing diverse factors that can trigger illness. One of the areas that the theory does not apply is caring for the biopsychosocial and mental faculties of patients. The weakness makes the theoretical framework less applicable in the delivery of care. The theory is applicable since it encourages nurses to care for themselves as they strive to provide quality and evidence-based care to patients.
