Observing Nonverbal Communication

Observing Nonverbal Communication

There are numerous ways people can convey verbal communication, such as facial expressions, body movement, tonal variation, the proximity between people, posture, clothes, touch, and eye movement. After visiting a mall, I met different people from different cultures, businesses, and backgrounds, and it was fascinating to observe and relate nonverbal communication to textbooks.
The mall is always characterized by different activities and people using verbal and nonverbal communication. The ladies used the traditional nonverbal communication of raising eyebrows and making eye contact while passing by another person. In contrast, males did not make facial expressions and walked upright. Due to the pandemic, people maintained their distance from other people, and attendants used body movements such as pointing. While at the cashier, the ladies used body movement and facial expressions to indicate they had understood what the cashier was saying.
However, some nonverbal communication provides the most revealing information compared to others. Eye contact and facial expressions convey the most revealing information in nonverbal communication. On the other hand, nonverbal cues such as smiling and gesturing are easily misinterpreted. One easily misinterpreted cue maintains eye contact, easily confused with dominance (Goleman, 1991). Moreover, there are generalizations regarding nonverbal communication based on gender, age, and culture. Women use more vigorous facial expressions and are more animated with their body movements than men (Barr et al., 2011). Culture and age also influence dressing codes which convey a different message about the person.
Nonetheless, nonverbal cues are essential in day-to-day communication. They can increase trust, enhance clarity and add interest in communication. Nonverbal communication may reinforce a message, substitute some words, contradict what a person is saying, complementing and accent messages.
In conclusion, people express nonverbal communication through body posture, gestures, haptics, facial expressions, eyes, proximity, tonal variation, and personal appearance. However, the cues vary depending on gender, culture, and age.
