Mission, Vision and Personal Goals

My name is xxxxx and I have been a nurse for 10 years. After graduating, I started my career in the hospital on ortho neuro unit. After healthcare budget cuts, our unit was closed and I was transferred to medical-surgical and telemetry. During my tenure at the hospital, I was also able to work in oncology. After resigning from the hospital, I started as a hemodialysis nurse. As a dialysis nurse, I knew within a few months of employment that I wanted to further my education to make a difference in the community. My ultimate five-year goal is to open a Home Health Care company to assist patients with activities of daily living. Prior to choosing an institution to further my education, I had to ensure Walden University was a good fit for me as I was to them. Walden University not only offered the specialization I was interested in, but was flexible with their curriculum which enables me to maintain full-time employment. Once I narrowed my search to two institutions, I reviewed the mission and vision statements of each along with student testimonials. At that point, choosing an institution was no longer a tedious task. Walden’s vision (2020) “to which the contributions of nursing, health and related science will transform the provision of nursing services along with the continuum of care and across the human life span to meet the needs of individuals and local and global communities” related directly to one of the reasons I plan to open a Home Health Care company. Helping those less fortunate is my passion, though I may not be able to reach all in need of assistance, I vow to give one hundred ten percent to reach those I can. When reading over the vision and mission statements, I see nursing taking a more holistic approach to care for patients, instead of only caring for their physical ailments. Nursing is not only caring for the patient’s illness, however healing the patient’s mind, body, and spirit. Obtaining my Master’s degree will also be beneficial to me with my current employer. I am currently a Facility Administrator at a dialysis company, the role is autonomous and the responsibility of the facility is similar to that of operating your very own business. As the administrator, I am responsible for the daily operation of the facility, staff members, patients, and finances. Every course within the Nurse Executive curricula is in alignment with my current role as an administrator. With receiving my MSN I feel it will strengthen me both through experience and education to be an effective administrator to my patients and team.

Incorporating Social Change

Implementing social change into one’s education is vital to facilitate success in the graduate program and in future endeavors. Whether one’s objective is to become a practitioner or an educator, the ability to care for or teach a diverse population can positively impact a community by encouraging patients to become more involved in their care to promote a healthy healing process. Walden’s vision is to empower students to make a difference by confronting those challenges where they live, in their professions, and on a global scale. (Walden 2020) Nursing has taken a more holistic approach to caring for a patient, ensuring that not only are they healing from their physical ailments, but their environment is safe and their psyche is intact. As a dialysis nurse, I experience this almost daily. Patients are sometimes unable to prepare their own meals and as a result they tend to become weak and have an increased risk of falling, causing more harm to themselves. We have patients in our facilities with mental illnesses, and we are unable to reach the patient to successfully treat them until we have treated their mental illness. I am more than confident that making the decision to further my education with Walden University, I will receive education and guidance in preparation for my future endeavors to greatly impact our communities.

I too share the same passion for holistic healthcare. I believe that the future of healthcare will treat the patient as a whole instead of by systems. As healthcare practitioners, I think that this path will be challenging but so rewarding in the end. When you spoke about treating the mind-body and spirit this really resonated with me. According to Eriksson, Linblad, Moller, and Gillsjo (2017), advanced practice nurses are preferred worldwide due to their unique blend of holistic and conventional medicine.

There is an increase in demand for advanced practice clinicians at an advanced level that are accessible to the public (Eriksson, Linblad, Moller, and Gillsjo, 2017). Your home health care idea fulfills this need as well as the growing demands of healthcare. To support you in this venture, have you thought about joining the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP)? The AANP is shaped by the shared vision and challenges of the evolving NP community and aims to empower all NP’s to advance the quality of healthcare through practice, education, advocacy, research, and leadership. The AANP has a plethora of resources and support for NP students (AANP, 2020).
