NR 599-10645 : Nursing Informatics

Electronic Health Records (EHRs) PROS CONS 1. Patients become involved in their own care, rather then relying solely on health care providers to educate and prepare them for their possible needs. 1. Having EHRs, if a system fails or crashes, that information is temporarily unavailable which can be harmful to patients. 2. The data is all accumulated in one place, to allow easier access for patients, and health care providers. 2. Everything online is hackable, including patient’s information included in electronic health records. 3. Electronic health records can auto populate suggestions that health care providers may have not thought about such as further testing that could be indicated, possible diagnosis, or risk factors to consider. 3. Because of the ease that electronic health records provide, it can often tempt individuals to access information that is not appropriate such as their own health records, or that of a family member or friend, which is not allowed.

Reflect upon your current or most recent clinical practice and answer the following: 1. How is informatics used? i. Regarding the Pre-TANIC Self-Assessment for this week, how did your perceived competency level prior to the self-assessment compare to after the self-assessment? Explain in detail. 2. What competencies do you use in your current clinical role? Provide at least one example. 3. Identify resources to develop a strategic plan to enhance your competency skills. 4. Which resources are suited to your needs and why? i. How do you intend to enact this improvement plan? Hello Professor and Class, Informatics is the use of technology within healthcare to maintain patient records, assist clinicians, improve quality care, and more. The advantages of applying information technology in all aspects of nursing, including clinical areas, management, education, and research are increasing patient safety and it’s leading to an evidence-based nursing, improve patient care, and improve efficiency and performance through information systems and new technologies (Darvish, Bahramnezhad, Keyhanian & Navidhamidi, 2014: 2024 – Essay Writing Service | Write My Essay For Me Without Delay). I perceived my competency level lower than I expected prior to taking the self-assessment since I do not use computers much outside of work and school. I did not really learn about computers

Week 1: Standardized Terminologies (ST) in Practice Standardized terminologies (STs) contribute to the development of knowledge because they ensure that all professionals share the same understanding or meaning of a given concept, to clarify communication, facilitate research, and provide structure for decision support tools and EHRs. As you look at the Foundation of Knowledge model, STs support knowledge acquisition, dissemination, generation, and processing. STs are structured, controlled languages developed to represent concepts in a given domain in a clear, unambiguous fashion that conveys the exact same meaning for data, information, and knowledge across settings, regions, and even different countries. This consistency affords access to information and knowledge when it is needed without regard to the current model or period of care. STs are key to the development of an EHR in order to represent, communicate, exchange, reuse, and report data, information, and knowledge, including Meaningful Use criteria (Matney & Lundberg, 2013). In addition to vocabularies, terminology standards also include nomenclatures, classification systems, data sets, and code sets. Each will be discussed briefly. Defining Characteristics Guidelines for the development of standard terminologies were established during the late 1990s and remain in use today (Cimino as cited in Matney & Lundberg, 2013). Cimino’s guidelines included 12 items. Guidelines addressed aspects that include content, concepts, and identification of concepts, hierarchy, relationships, and formal definitions. Terminologies are based upon concepts rather than terms and allow for growth over time. Also, once concepts enter a terminology, they should not be deleted or reused. While a concept has a single unambiguous meaning, it can have one or more representations or synonyms. Each concept has a unique identifier known as a code, which is made of alphanumeric characters. The code supports tracking data for various purposes, including evidence-based practice, decision support, and reports. Current Terminologies and Language Despite the intent of STs to represent concepts in a clear, unambiguous fashion, the numbers and different types of terms used to discuss STs can be confusing initially. Some of these terms include the following

Week 5 Reflection
You will need to post your reflection here before you are able to see other students’ posts. In what ways could an understanding of systems theory and complexity science impact the role of the NP? Take a few minutes to reflect on the NP practice model that is most predominant in advanced practice environments you have observed. Are you satisfied with the demonstrated level of interprofessional collaboration? Briefly consider what appears to be the driving practice model for advanced practice nursing in your state. If your state lags behind in its practice model language, what might you do to facilitate change?

Week 6 Discussion
Federal, state and local agencies related to informatics reminds me of federal, state and local taxes. Our government taxes are regulated and there are standards and guidelines that taxpayers must follow. In healthcare, there are many potential safety, security and privacy, and compliance issues related to health Informatics, and are regulated by federal, state and local agencies. Nationally, or federally, the ANA, (American Nurse’s Association), is an organization that sets standards for nursing practices for all nurses, whether undergraduates or graduates. These are policies and safeguards that each nurse follows regardless of their role or where they practice (McGonigle & Mastrian, 2018: 2024 – Write My Essay For Me | Essay Writing Service For Your Papers Online). More locally, there is The Joint Commission, (TJC). In the facility where I work, we recently had a visit from this organization. TJC is responsible for making sure that all local hospitals are providing the most effective quality of care in the safest way possible. Prior to the TJC coming to our unit, I as a PCNA asked my nurse manager
