Essay on Diversity in sports in the US
You will be required to write an 5-7 page paper on one of the issues we cover in class, focusing on sport and the media. Topics include deviance, violence, gender, race, sexuality, disability, politics/nationalism, and activism.
In this class, we looked at multiple areas where issues and/or conflict occur.
For this paper, you will choose one specific case or issue in sports media and examine it. The purpose of the paper is for you to research a current issue in sports coverage, and demonstrate mastery of knowledge on that topic. You must cite a minimum of three (3) primary sources, and Wikipedia is not considered a primary source. You are allowed to pick a topic we have discussed in class. The topic you choose must rise to the level of controversy. So writing a paper with the topic of “The NFL gets a lot of media coverage” is not acceptable, but a paper with the topic of “ESPN is afraid to be critical of the NFL in its coverage” is acceptable. Regardless of the topic you choose, you must demonstrate through your writing that you have thoroughly researched the topic.
If you have any doubts about the specificity of your paper topic, run the idea by the instructor or teaching assistant via email.
Pages: 5-7 (5 minimum, 7 maximum) (Times New Roman, 12-point, double-spaced), not including your sources page Sources: Best paper writer websites, Custom term paper writing service and Research papers owl essays – Professional help in research projects for students – Cite your sources within the paper (according to XYZ person in XYZ article), and then include full bibliographical details on a separate page.
Structure: Your paper should be broken into four sections:
>>Background: Brief overview/context of the people/organizations involved. You should clearly define or identify the general topic, issue, or area of concern. Establish your reason (point of view) for choosing this topic. Finalize your this section with the main idea you will be providing your commentary (argument) on.
>>Content: What are the major issues and conflicts? What do critics and supporters say about the issue? While acknowledging the position you are taking, you must also acknowledge the opposition side and points of view The ideas in your paper should be well-developed, supported by citations and examples. For the counter-argument to the topic you are commentating on, you should provide at least an overview of the main points of the ‘other side’ (for example, if you are arguing collegiate athletes should be paid, then a portion of your paper should focus on why they should not).
>>Analysis: What do you think? Your analysis of the conflict you’re looking at.
>>Conclusion: The conclusion of the paper should wrap up your main ideas, restate the overall problem you looked at, and provide final remarks. The conclusion should be engaging and interesting (don’t be afraid to put examples in the conclusion).
Above all, your paper should be presented in a professional and clear manner. 20% of the paper is based on style/spelling/grammar. Papers with significant spelling and grammar errors will receive a large deduction. Proofread and use spell check.
