The student will formulate an independent project in an area of interest under the direction of the instructor.

Aug 22/ TOPIC ANALYSIS PAPER – students will write an essay ( a minimum of 500 words) in which they share a brief analysis on the topic that they will use as the focus for their project. This paper must include at minimum 4 sources and follow current Ace homework tutors – APA formatting (include a title page and reference page)

For my project I chose mental health and traumatic brain injuries in sports. This topic is becoming ever more relevant as time passes because head injuries are occurring even more and there are lasting effects from them. Head injuries in general are not fun but for some they have lasting symptoms, sometimes severe symptoms and for some it eventually leads to death. It relates to the career I want to have because I want to help other who have dealt with this and feel like they are alone. I, myself, know what it is like to feel that way and to seek a way out when I felt there was no help for me and felt abandoned. For me I fell and fractured my skull from back to front and was in a coma for 3 days. The lasting effects this had are numerous, even affecting my basic bodily movements and completely weakening my nervous system from the brain damage. That is just the physical side which can lead to even more injuries and bodily imbalance but the mental side can be even worse. The mental side can lead to post concussive syndrome, post traumatic stress disorder, cognitive issues, depression, anxiety, bipolar attributes, schizophrenic attributes and the list goes on and on. Traumatic brain injuries don’t even have to be sports related but they can all cause the same amount of harm.

Sep 19/ Part I – journal analysis
Essay (800-1000) words in which they compare 3 scholarly articles with different points of view on the same topic/issue. Articles must be present (10 years or less). Paper will include a title page and reference page. Analysis must thoroughly interpret examine the articles for perspective (standpoint), validity (soundness/authority), and significance (implication/worth) of the findings. Should support discussion with relevant facts, arguments, examples, and details from the review of each article. There must be a clearly identified discussion section in which you describe the practical application to the broader topic. Must also identify relevant scriptural principles and perspectives from a biblical worldview. Oct 17/ Part 2 – media analysis

Must be determined what perspectives are present or absent, and assess sources for bias. Will include title page and reference page. Will be analyzed for perspective, validity, and significance. Nov 14/ Part 3 – written report
Written report ( 8 pages minimum, not including the title and reference page.
1. An introduction to the topic and why it is relevant
2. A literature review around the main opportunities/challenges/findings in relation to the topic
3. A personal application section detailing what you plan to do with the information you researched.
4. A biblical perspective section
5. A conclusion to recap the topic and relevance. Must include sources from previous parts and add 2 more sources ( sources from topic analysis paper may be used)

Minimum of 8 sources, 6 of which must be current (10 years or less)

My story and why the topic is relevant to me. I had a head injury and fractured my skull from the back all the way to the front. I flatlined for abit and then had to be hooked up to a ventilator because I wasn’t breathing on my own anymore. I was then in a coma for 3 days. I almost lost my eye from the damage, and lost my sense of smell from the damage and scar tissue to my nasal cavity. Because of the brain damage my whole body was out of balance and I had to learn to fully move my right side again. If I did try to walk I would drift to the left. It took me a year to be able to even jog again. It has been 7 years and I still suffer physically. Since my body was so out of wack I get hurt a lot easier now and im weaker. Mentally since then I have suffered even more. I have developed PTSD, anxiety, major depression with psychotic features, cognitive learning disorder and traits/features of other mental illnesses. I also have to continuously get my right eye checked, and get my brain checked to make sure nothing has grown because they did leave spots in there. I was told I would never get to play soccer again but here I am.

From a biblical perspective it says to hve hope and trust in the Lord and some could say it helped them push forward in their recovery. But one who is not of clear mind by say a brain injury could lose that faith and fall into continuous sin because they have no control or no idea of what they are doing.
