In each week of the class you will submit a one page (minimum) case study that takes a closer look at a public health issue in the US. With each of these one page responses, the student is responsible for identifying a community/public health issue, what group is particularly at risk from this public health problem, what is being done about the health problem now, and what policy could be used for this problem in the future. This, for example, could be lack of mental health resources for middle school students. A case study will discuss the issue, talk about why this particular group is so affected, what is being done, and what can be done to fix the lack of mental health resources for middle school students. When writing one of these case studies, make sure to use at least two (2) pieces of support from the library in the form of journal articles, magazine articles, and/or newspaper articles. Nothing from the WEB and nothing from WIKIPEDIA! Stay away from these. Each case study should be thoughtful, research a real problem, and look at very real policy issues surrounding this public health problem.
Mental Health Challenges Among Middle School Students: A Growing Public Health Concern
Mental health issues have become increasingly prevalent among American youth in recent decades. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, approximately one in five children ages 13-18 experiences a severe mental disorder at some point. While mental illnesses can affect individuals of any age, adolescence represents a critical period of development that warrants close attention from a public health perspective. Middle school students, in particular, face unique challenges that may exacerbate risks to their mental well-being. This case study examines the lack of adequate mental health resources for middle school-aged youth and proposes policy solutions to better address this significant public health problem.
Middle school marks a transition between childhood and the teenage years, bringing biological, psychological and social changes that can induce stress and anxiety (Blakemore & Robbins, 2014: 2024 – Essay Writing Service. Custom Essay Services Cheap). Students in grades 6-8 are navigating puberty, developing more complex relationships, and facing higher academic demands—all while their prefrontal cortex is still maturing (Steinberg, 2014: 2024 – Essay Writing Service | Write My Essay For Me Without Delay). These developmental factors leave many middle schoolers vulnerable to depression, substance abuse, self-harm and suicidal ideation (Kann et al., 2016: 2024 – Do my homework – Help write my assignment online). According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), suicide is now the second leading cause of death among Americans aged 10-24 (2019: 2024 – Online Assignment Homework Writing Help Service By Expert Research Writers).
Despite their elevated risks, middle school students have limited access to mental healthcare services. Most schools lack sufficient counseling staff, with student-to-counselor ratios far exceeding recommended guidelines (American School Counselor Association, 2021). Additionally, the stigma surrounding mental illness often prevents youth from openly discussing issues or seeking help (Gulliver et al., 2010 – Essay Writing Service: Write My Essay by Top-Notch Writer). Parents and teachers may overlook warning signs, attributing problems to typical adolescent moodiness rather than clinical disorders. Without early intervention and treatment, conditions can worsen through high school and beyond (Kessler et al., 2007).
Current policy approaches have been inadequate in addressing this public health crisis. The Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act of 2008 – Affordable Custom Essay Writing Service | Write My Essay from Pro Writers required insurers to cover mental health at parity with physical conditions; however, many plans still impose barriers like prior authorization or high deductibles (Beronio et al., 2013). School-based programs are underfunded, leaving counselors overextended. Community clinics face long waitlists as demand outpaces available providers and services (Thomas et al., 2014: 2024 – Essay Writing Service | Write My Essay For Me Without Delay).
To better support the mental wellness of middle school students, policy reforms must prioritize early detection and improved access to care. First, schools need increased funding to hire more counselors, psychologists, and social workers per student (American School Counselor Association, 2021). Regular mental health screenings could also help identify at-risk youth. Second, insurers must simplify utilization management processes and lower out-of-pocket costs to eliminate financial barriers to treatment. Third, incentives should be established to recruit and retain mental health professionals willing to serve adolescent populations, especially in underserved areas.
With comprehensive policy changes, communities can establish a continuum of mental health services for middle school students. Schools represent ideal settings for prevention education, screening, and initial treatment. Linkages then connect youth seamlessly to community-based outpatient therapy or intensive programs if needed. A systematic, multi-level approach holds promise to curb the rising prevalence of mental illness among America’s youth by addressing this public health crisis at its earliest stages. With proper support during these formative middle school years, students’ mental wellness and academic success can be optimized long into adulthood.
