ME 101 Materials Engineering Project 1: Materials Description.
For the final project for the course, you will choose a single application where various materials have been or could be used and
motivate why you will use one specific material. As part of this, you will have to seek documentation to research the material’s
structure, behavior, historical uses and means of fabrication. You will have to learn how to find, synthesize and write about
material’s information.
For this first project, you will collect information on two materials which you have interest in further studying, so that you can
compare them. These could be materials that might end up in your final project. Research those two materials using textbooks,
library books, research papers, engineering‐based on‐line information and interaction with the manufacturers. Compare and
contrast the two materials. How are they similar and different?
In a group of two or three, write a five page summary of your findings. Find information about and describe: 1) chemical
composition; 2) unit cell structure – monomer structure; 3) grain structure – polymer structure; 4) physical properties (ie. density,
etc.); 5) material properties (ie. moduli, strengths, etc.); 6) relevant thermal or electrical properties; 7) a basic description of
manufacturing methodologies that work well with them; and 8) basic information about sustainability concerns. Include an
Introduction statement and a summary of your comparison. Post to Blackboard as a .pdf by 5pm on Oct. 12.
Include figures and tables that best express and contrast the two materials that you have made. Use the resources below, not
Google, not Wikipedia. There should be at least five sources cited. Properly cite all of your references:

Use the:
Materials Science Research Guide. A library course guide built by the Engineering Librarian with much information on searching
research literature, patents, and standards; (http://researchguides.uvm.edu/matsci ). Also see the tutorials;
UVM Engineering Librarian. Graham Sherriff. To learn how to better use library or on‐line resources, sign up for a consultation with
him on his page: (http://library.uvm.edu/about/staff/50 ).
UVM Library. There are many specific books on materials (http://library.uvm.edu/ ).
Included on the Research Guide are:
MatWeb. MatWeb is a searchable database of material properties that includes data sheets for many engineering materials:
polymers, metals and ceramics (https://essays.homeworkacetutors.com/write-my-essay/matweb.com).
The Materials Project. The Materials Project is an open science initiative that makes available a huge database of computed
material properties. It aims to reduce guesswork from materials design in a variety of applications to accelerate innovation in
materials research. With tutorials. (http://materialsproject.org ).
NIST Data Gateway. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has a Data Gateway that provides access to many of
the NIST scientific and technical databases. These databases cover a broad range of substances and properties form many different
scientific disciplines. Somewhat complicated. Free databases are listed: (https://srdata.nist.gov/gateway/gateway?dblist=1) .
Alloy Database. Provides “structures and enthalpy of formation data for stable and metastable structures of many alloy systems”.
Provided by a Physics research group at Carnegie Mellon University
Cambridge Structural Database (CSD) A repository of small molecule crystal structures. The CSD System also comprises software for
database access, structure visualization and data analysis, and structural knowledge bases derived from the CSD.
There are various for‐fee on‐line resources: ASM Materials Information, CES Selector, Knovel and NIST Data Gateway.
