Mandated Reporting of Child Abuse: Laws requiring the mandated reporting of child abuse have been enacted in every state in the United States. Mandated reporting laws cross disciplines (counseling, psychology, medicine, nursing, education, etc.). I feel that children are so innocent that they should not be abused or neglected. Unfortunately, there are many cases of children being neglected and abused in the United States. Children are abused and neglected every day in the United Stated and all over the world. One of the ways to end child abuse is for people to report it when the see any signs of abuse and neglect being given towards a child. The only problem is that sometimes when a spectator reports signs of abuse and neglect that it might be inaccurate. The other flip side of the issue is that sometimes a case manager, or an outside spectator might see possible signs of neglect and ignore it. When the possible issue of a child being neglected, or abused gets overlooked there is often a chance that a child’s life is in danger. Therefore, it is best that all possible child neglect and abuse should be reported until further investigation can deny the fact. (Pennsylvania Family Support Alliance, 2020) Mandatory reporters do not make the decision or investigation to determine if child abuse occurs, they are only there to report it. I remember when my friend’s sister went to school with beer in her book bag and drank the beer on school premises. The school officials became involved and sent a case manager to come and investigate their home. My friend’s mom is a mother of three and hard working. The incident of my friend’s sister drinking beer was the first time her mom and their household were ever investigated. My friend’s mother was so upset by the situation because she knows she was a good mother who had raised all her children right. Also, my friend’s sister was in high school and was well aware that drinking beer and taking beer to school was not acceptable. Her parents had never allowed her to engage in any alcoholic beverages. As an experimental teenager, my friend’s sister felt that it would be a good idea to bring alcohol to school. I also feel that as a minor she was still at the age where she is old enough to understand that she should not have brought the liquor to school or consume it. I feel that she knew it was wrong as no one in her family has ever given her liquor to drink and this was not a behavior that she would typically display.

In conclusion, cases occur all the time where parents get investigated by school officials because of possible signs of neglect or abuse. Human service professionals are a part of the mandatory reporters of child abuse and work hard daily to make certain that the welfare of minors are protected .I feel that they should try to treat each possible child abuse case the same until further investigated. When a child abuse case is taking for granted, overlooked and not properly investigated could cost a child’s life or continued abuse. Sometimes it is not the parent’s fault as to why the child has various behavior issues like not wanting to attend school or doing things that could cause their parents to be investigated. I feel a lot of the times parents do try their hardest to take care of their children and not neglect them. However, sometime there are unforeseen circumstances that can occur that will allow officials to get involved and a parent become investigated. Sometimes, a parent might be a single parent and trying their best to provide for their child but may need some social support from outside sources to intervene. Or sometimes the child is just a problem child and wants to be defiant of good home training. There are other instances where some parents have mental issues, substance abuse issues and other issues that cause them to neglect their child. I feel that these bizarre cases of neglect and child abuse is what makes every possible neglect or child abuse scenario be under strict scrutiny. I feel that it is necessary for all child abuse and neglect cases to be treated the same. However, I feel that once the case worker realizes that there was no previous history reported of child abuse and neglect and no other incidents occur that they should dismiss the situation and not hold it against the parent. I feel that in life things will happen, but it is good to have laws that will protect the welfare and well being of children who cannot take care of themselves. The child welfare laws make mandatory reporting possible necessary and hold human service professionals accountable to report any issues of child abuse and neglect.
