It is not an exercise on just submitting, but it is an exercise on careful thinking on your part to improve the essay based on the writing consultant’s comments. You may choose to submit multiple drafts or attend multiple face-to-face tutoring sessions before the final product is due.
Essay with Sources Assignment: From the short stories we read: From Volume D: Zora Neale Hurston’s “Sweat” OR From Volume E: John Updike’s “Separating,” Leslie Marmon Silko’s “Lullaby,” or Sandra Cisneros’s “Woman Hollering Creek”
select one author and work to analyze his or her work and the impact of (CHOOSE ONE) a social issue, a cultural issue, a political issue, or historical events of the period on the work. Discuss the author’s address of the issue in the time period in which the work was written. Is the social, cultural, political, and/or historical issue still relevant today? Is it still relevant in the same way?
Requirements:
Paragraph #1: The Introduction Paragraph must have the following:
the author and his or her short story. (Remember: short story titles go in quotation marks.)
the time period (when written) and the type of work: modernism or postmodernism.
a clear thesis. No questions for a thesis. (No questions anywhere, period.)
Secondary sources should not be mentioned in the introduction, in the thesis statement, nor should they be mentioned in the first sentence of a paragraph. Begin with your voice, your point. Secondary sources support. Read “Considerations for When Writing about Literature:” below.
Sample of a thesis statement from a short story we did not read:
In “The Chrysanthemums,” John Steinbeck illustrates that the Allen’s marriage suffers from Elisa’s tendency toward self-isolation, and from the absence of quality communication between Elisa and her husband, issues that are still relevant in relationships today. (Notice how it addresses the full prompt–issues that are still relevant today.)
Body Paragraphs:
Set up clear topic sentences. Secondary sources should not be mentioned in the topic sentences.
Incorporate one or two quotes from the short story. Double check MLA in-text citations and quoting. (Use the Incorporating Quotes and Documentation: MLA In-Text Citations handout found in Announcements or go to the Stone Writing Center’s website for help. )
Incorporate at least four quotes from the secondary sources. The combination may be two quotes from each secondary source, but it may also be three and one.
Do not quote more than four lines. The essay is too short to include block quotes.
Do not begin a paragraph with a quote. Begin with your voice–your point.
Do not end a paragraph with a quote. End with your voice explaining your concluding point.
Do not quote back-to-back.
Avoid “dropped” quotes. (Read “Final Comments” in the Incorporating Quotes and Documentation: MLA In-Text Citations handout found in Announcement.)
Use author’s last name–after establishing credentials the first time secondary source is used.

Audience: Your instructor and your classmates.

Do not use contractions—unless in a quote.
Do not ask questions in the essay. (No rhetorical questions.)
Purpose: to inform, to entertain, and to persuade.

The environment was harsh, as even “[t]he babe, Tommie, died” (Crane 1012). <–There is always just one period at the end—even if you quote a sentence. Look on page 1012 to see that the quote is a complete sentence, but there is only one period, and it goes at the end of the parentheses. Also, pay attention to the capitalization and brackets. Go to Announcements for the MLA link of when to capitalize in a quote.

*Important: Considerations for When Writing about Literature:
“Maintain a Critical Focus”: “The topic sentences (usually the first one of each paragraph in the body of the paper) should be critical observations supporting or relating to your thesis.” Set up points from the thesis in the topic sentences. Remember that you are not writing summaries. If you must summarize, do so briefly in 1-2 sentences.
“Developing with Details”: maintain an effective balance of interpretive points and details. Too many details and essay sounds like a summary; if just interpretive direction, and then essay sounds “too abstract” and “unconvincing.”
Use active, vivid verbs.
