Asian-American Simon Tam, lead singer for a musical group called the SLANTS, attempted to have the U.S. Trademark Office register its band’s name. The Trademark Office refused to do so, on the basis that provisions of 15 U.S.C. §1052(a) prohibit federal registration of disparaging trademarks.
