The U.S supported the communist in Central America during the eruption of the major civil war and communist revolution of 1970s-80s through persuading their interest by creating a puppet government and elite classes to diminish the peasants and working class political and economic demands (Merom, 1990). The U.S applied different tactics in managing the communist crises in different countries in Latin America by introducing them to harsh living condition to discourage them from resistance. In Nicaragua, the U.S supported the Somoza dictatorship to fight against Sandinista National Liberation Front who supported communism. In El Salvador, the U.S government sponsored the umbrella organization to fight against the military-led government, creating tension and violence even before the outbreak of the civil wars. while responding to fight against communism in Latin America, the U.S government attacked Honduras’ economy by stagnating agricultural production which was the main economic support of the country. The U.S also facilitated de-industrialization, violating the terms of trade, declining the country’s international financial support, and increasing unemployed and supporting all initiatives that facilitated the economic decline of Honduras.
The U.S had to use different strategies to respond toward communism resistance in Latin America as the countries had different approaches that supported their economic and political states. The main aim was to weaken the country’s economy thus restraining them from the fight and forcing them to refrain from the civil wars and resistance (Lehman, 1997). The employed efforts and tactics to defend communism in Latin Countries were successful at a higher extent. The U.S managed to persuade the majority to resist the fight against communism through providing them with financial support and involving them in political affairs as well as creating peace agreements.
