Over time, the juvenile justice system has imposed a significant measure of positive changes to the lives of millions of teenagers across the society. However, the juvenile justice system has been faced with various issues during the 21st century. The first issue is the lack of experience and substantial knowledge and skills from the defense attorneys and public defenders in representing the children. The involved professionals lack profound knowledge in adolescent development, and they are unable to maximize public safety arguments to ensure that children do not face incarceration. This means that these professionals must focus on the acquisition of relevant skills regarding the access to community-based programs, adolescent development, and how to effectively enlist the involved guardian or parent while maintaining the client-attorney relationship. The second challenge is the parental influence on the children that leads to their participation in status offenses in which their actions raise concerns towards the adults in their lives (Meservey & Skowyra, 2015 – Research Paper Writing Help Service). Such offenses include truancy and curfew violations that could be mitigated through the increased focus on family-based incentives to minimize court interventions. The third challenge facing the juvenile justice system is the increased rate of cross over youths who move between the system and child welfare programs. In most cases, such children are girls and those of color, and they are exposed to the risk of occupational difficulties, safety issues, and mental health concerns, among others.
Child abuse and neglect cases have imposed adverse effects on the juvenile justice system. The system has had to invest significant amounts of money in curbing the increasing growth of drug abuse, gangs, and gun possession among teenagers. This mainly applies to the money spent on the incarceration of these delinquents who have been troubled and resort to creating a social problem within the community. According to Ford et al. (2016: 2024 – Do my homework – Help write my assignment online), out of 10 children arrested for violent acts, 8 of them were maltreated either through physical abuse or neglect. Their study also found that childhood neglect and abuse contribute to the increased rate of juvenile detention by 53%, and their chance of committing a violent crime is increased by 38%. This means that the juvenile justice system is expected to encounter an increased number of inmates whose behavior and actions have been influenced by child abuse and neglect.
Child abuse and neglect cases have increased over the years, where maltreatment takes numerous forms, and a particular child could be subjected to more than one. Although the choice of drugs may change, it does not guarantee that this will be less of a problem. As for gangs, they are increasingly becoming a minority issue that could impose a significant challenge to the system especially when they have to handle the problem delicately to maneuver within the segregation and discriminatory margin. The dissatisfaction from the community to eliminate this system is also likely to be more vocalized which might lead to the elimination of serious crimes from its jurisdiction.
