Juvenile Justice Administration
A child is simply a young person who is innocent. Simplicity, lack of knowledge, and purity not yet spoiled by mundane affairs are some of the characteristics that define a child. The definition of Child has changed throughout the years, and this has impacted the way systems responded to juvenile offending. Conventionally, a child has been defined as an individual who is below the age of 18 years. Also, a child has been defined as an immature person who does not have the capacity to think through their actions. This ability may vary in different ages. It is for this reason that there is a variation in different states with regard to minimum and maximum ages to be sent to juvenile courts. For instance, while some states send children as young as 6 years to juvenile court, in some states, children aged 10 years and above are the ones sent to this court.
The government is the ideal entity for dealing with all aspects of children’s lives. One of the main roles of the government is to protect its citizens, children included. Therefore, whenever there is reason to believe that a child’s wellbeing is in danger, it is the duty of the government to step in and help the child. Parens Patriae is still valid. It ensures that the state acts as a legal guardian to children who have been abused and neglected. I believe that Parens Patriae is noble as it seeks to protect the rights of a child.
The motivations for the women who started the Juvenile Court was to divert young offenders from criminal courts’ destructive punishments and encouraging rehabilitation on the basis of the individual needs of juveniles. These motivations are noble in that they provide juveniles with the chance to rectify their mistakes and make something good out of their lives.
Net widening refers to the process of administrative or practical changes that lead to a bigger number of people being controlled by the criminal justice system. An example of a modern program that appears to be more net widening and less reform is drug-related diversion programs.
