Journal Article Review Paper

One of the goals in this class is for you to gain a more in-depth knowledge of the types of research being conducted in the area of relational communication. Learning how to read, interpret, and analyze scholarly work is essential to a successful academic career in communication and many other fields.

You will be selecting an article from an academic journal that interests you. The article that you select should apply theory to some aspect of relational communication. You will then write a review/critique of your article, including the positives and successful parts of the study/article, as well as the areas for improvement or pitfalls.

The goal of this assignment is for you to be able to critically analyze a theory-based research article. Some issues to consider while writing are:
• Review of Literature
o Was a strong case presented for why this research is important?
o Did the author(s) clearly identify the theory being used/tested?
o Were clear research questions/hypotheses presented?
o Did the author(s) of the study make sound arguments for their hypotheses and/or research questions?
• Method
o Was this the right way to go about this study? Are the methods appropriate given the goals of the study, and how might they be improved?
o Did they look at a diverse enough sample size?
o Did this method adequately answer the research questions/hypotheses presented?
• Results/Discussion
o Did the research yield results?
o Was the theory used successfully?
o Were the findings clearly explained?
o How else could the results of the study be interpreted differently than how they were discussed in the journal article? What else could have led to the results the researchers found?
o What do you think of the study and the results?
o What do the findings of this study mean for the public – as in, how could a common person use the knowledge discovered in this journal article?
o Were the limitations clearly identified?
o What future research does the study suggest?
• Overall
o What are the study’s strengths and limitations?
o Was this article easily understood by readers?
o Was the theory used successfully?

These questions should be used as a guide for critiquing the articles that you select, but you do not have to answer all of these questions. Choose the questions that are most relevant for critiquing your article. If other issues seem relevant, you can address those questions instead or in addition to some of the questions above. Your article critique should be between 3 and 5 pages of double-spaced text (not including the cover page and reference page). Above or below this limit will result in point deductions. Be sure to include a citation to your article in the reference page (this likely will be your only reference, and that is fine! This paper is more concerned with your critique of the article than researching outside sources).

Paper Setup

Introduction: Your first paragraph is an introduction that includes a thesis statement that describes the purpose of your paper. Preview how the rest of the paper will be structured (i.e., what will your main points be?). Make sure these are in the same order in which you address them in your paper.

Summary of Article: Summarize your article, including the topic, method, findings, and other key components you find necessary to summarizing the research. Think of this section of the paper as writing your own abstract. **Be sure not to plagiarize the abstract that is included within the article. Write your own version of it instead.** This section should also include why you chose this article. You will need to be brief, but also specific. Cut out extra wording and avoid repetition.

Analysis (part one): The next few paragraphs should describe the strengths of the article. What did they authors do right? Investigating other journal articles that use the same theory or similar methods might be helpful. Be sure to also include an explanation of the theory used either in this section or the following
section.

Analysis (part two): The next few paragraphs should describe the limitations of the article. What should they have done differently? How could they have improved this research/article? Be sure to also include an explanation of the theory used either in this section or the previous section.

Conclusion: Finally, end with a brief concluding paragraph that revisits your main points (concisely) and describes what you learned from the experience.

Format, Writing, and Grammar: An APA cover page is required. The format must be double-spaced, use standard margins (i.e. 1 inch on all sides), 12-point Times New Roman font, and should not exceed 5 pages in length. Correct APA citations and references are required although you may only have one citation and reference (your chosen article). I suggest proofing each other’s work before handing in your paper.

Informal Presentation: Bring a printed out copy of the article with you to class on the due date. Be ready to discuss the article and what you wrote in your paper. This is not a formal presentation, but simply, I expect you to be able to engage in conversation and debate with your peers regarding the article you read. Presentations are planned for the same day that the papers are due.

• Sub-headers for sections (optional)
• Reference page with article and any additional sources used (e.g., textbook)
SUGGESTIONS: I suggest searching theories that we have discussed in class; that you have discussed in past classes; or that are of particular interest to you. If you know of a particular scholar’s work you like, search articles from that author. The most useful databases are Google Scholar and Comm & Mass Media Complete.
