Is Chivalry Dead?

Is Chivalry Dead?
Chivalry is courteous, helpful, and polite behavior, particularly from a male towards a female. It is a knight’s code followed in middle age. Chivalry still exists in the modern world. It has been employed in different areas of modern society. Chivalry has been portrayed in law, where it has been used to providing justice to the less privileged such as women. The concept of respect for women is still part of modern society. Some of the codes of Chivalry that existed in British literature include qualities such as honor, courtesy, bravery, and outstanding gallantry towards women. All these codes still exist in modern American society. Thus, in this paper, I will discuss why Chivalry is not dead in American society.
Since the medieval era, when the concept of Chivalry was established, society has continuously adopted ways to respect women. In the US, men are always in their best and perfect behavior. Women are offered more opportunities (in business, politics, and even public offices) compared to the past. Currently, men act gentlemanly to show their respect for women while in their presence (Stanislav, 2). Often, men are not worried about their behavior and character when hanging out with their male friends. But when they are with female friends, they always try to keep their emotions, character, and behaviors in check. They always try to refrain from acting in a manner that will offend women. For instance, men always avoid behaviors such as burping and swearing when they are with women. Also, there many men in the US campaigning for equality between men and women. They try to break the chauvinism barrier in the nation. Men’s behavior always shows respect towards women proving that Chivalry still exists in the current society.
Similarly, there are more opportunities for women in modern American society. In the past, women were considered powerless without men, but there are many independent women in the current world (Doran, Bartel, & Waldfogel, 6). In the past, the roles of women were limited to staying at home and raising children. Men were the primary breadwinner and the owner of properties. But in the current society, women have equal job opportunities like men and are independent. Many women work to support themselves, and those who chose to stay at home are not disregarded in society. Women have the opportunity to live any lifestyle they want. Also, men always assist women when they find them doing physical labor showing how they value women. These activities demonstrate the existence of Chivalry.
Additionally, the American Supreme court has recognized the chivalric concept of women and their place in the world. The courts emphasize the clear roles that were to be occupied by men and women (Shatz & Shatz, 70). Nature and civil law have consistently identified a wide variation in men’s and women’s respective destinies and spheres. In American civil law, men should always be the defender and protector of women. The supreme mission and destiny of women in society are to achieve the benign and noble office of mother and wife. Therefore, the way justice is provided in the modern courts also demonstrates the existence of Chivalry.
In conclusion, Chivalry is a respectful and polite behavior that is still part of modern American society. Moreover, the American court system recognizes the chivalric concept of women and their place in the world of Chivalry. Besides, there are more opportunities for women in the current American society. Therefore, it is evident that Chivalry still exists in today’s society.
