IOM Core Competency Paper: Reflection and Research Paper

Background:

The Institute of Medicine (IOM) has described five core competencies (CCs) required of health professionals to improve professional practice and patient outcomes (IOM, 2003). Quality and Safety Education for Nurses QSEN has expanded these to include knowledge, skills and attitudes (KSAs) that nurses demonstrate in six areas (Cronenwett, et al., 2007):

Patient-Centered Care
Teamwork and Collaboration
Evidence-based Practice
Quality Improvement
Informatics
Safety (added by QSEN)
Directions:

Now, consider this real-life situation: You are now a BSN RN, with five years’ experience and demonstrated competence and leadership. You are quite proud of your colleagues (the healthcare team) and the quality care you provide to your clients/ patients (in the healthcare setting of your choice). However, you feel your unit could improve in one or more of the IOM core competencies.

For this paper, you are to examine one (or more) of the CCs, and briefly formulate a plan to educate your staff and implement a new strategy to improve patient outcomes. Include the following elements, in any order:

Write a page paper – Describe one of the IOM Core Competencies (CCs), and the impact it has on patient care outcomes.
Briefly describe the context of your practice (either current or future hoped-for), including the unit or healthcare setting/ facility, location, fellow healthcare providers (1-2 paragraphs max).
Share information about the clients/ patients generally cared for, especially some key patient outcomes for this group(1-2 paragraphs max).
Research the CC in peer-reviewed, scholarly sources (at least 3 sources in addition to your text) and reflect upon these articles to form an independent opinion of how to best improve patient outcomes by increasing awareness of the CC you have chosen.
Write a page paper – Describe three (3) ways in which you can positively impact your clinical practice and patient care outcomes with your chosen CC.
Think about the current challenges in health care delivery, and report on the potential barriers to implementing the strategies you have suggested.
What is one (1) critical strategy for success (it must be included for successful implementation of the CC, and it is reasonable and achievable).
There are no right or wrong answers, only more or less reflection and research.

Begin draft 1 (use text to begin your reflection and research)

Submit first draft of CC Paper by Saturday 11:59 PM
Module 6
After draft 1 is graded, begin making revisions for Final Draft
Note: If you receive less than a 92 on your first draft, the second draft is MANDATORY. If you receive a 92 or better on the first draft, your second draft is optional- you will simply get the same grade on both drafts if you choose not to resubmit.
