INTERNSHIP EXPERIENCE REPORT
Activity Summary
My internship was in the field of construction management. I learnt a lot besides the management target as the company exposed me to interconnected fields of construction engineering. Basically, my work was in the office working with Revit and AutoCAD software. These are the best tools for making house design, and learning to work with them was an outstanding experience. Besides the software use, I learnt how to read blueprints, choosing of construction materials & alternatives and efficient communication with team members as well as higher management. All of the mentioned activities above massively aided in building my career prospects.
Core of Construction + Design Education
Estimating is a fundamental subject which greatly determine great success in construction engineering (Smith, 2017). Its fundamental aspect from the budgeting aspect which controls the entire construction goals. Therefore, in my perspectives, estimating subject need to be developed more in the school of Construction + Design. One of the ways of improving can be provision of cost sources to the construction engineering students. With the cost sources students can easily spend less time in having access to RSMeans. Explanation of how to generate take offs for students so that they can do it themselves is another goal of boosting estimating subject. I being a perfect example, the absence of take offs explanation by the school has limited my capabilities of performing the task efficiently and effectively by myself. Another explanation needed to be done by the school is on calculating profits and overheads. Technically, estimating is known to involve pre-calculations which aid in decision making. This makes profits and overhead calculations an essential area to be taught in order to improve on estimating. Lastly but not least, I suggest for the school to enroll real estimator for talks on work experience. An experienced person has a lot to offer as they transpire of what is expected in real world for this subject perfection. The talks can therefore aid in giving us specific areas to work on in order to become competitive and professional estimators in the future.
Internship Value
I was initially looking for an internship in construction management. However the internship ended up in challenging my preference choice in the construction field. The challenge emerged from the huge exposure to designers who opened my eyes on design field; which also determines the success of construction. I realized that I could also do construction design as it serves similar cause to management, but it is more fun and practical. However, it takes a lot of skills to be a designer but it is a path I plan to follow deeply.
Challenges
One of the challenges experienced during the internship is absence of family time. The internship was basically a mirror reflection of a real job, where I worked on full time basis. In addition to full time working hours, extra time was needed for the design learning which consumed my free time. Therefore, I was occupied the whole day for the entire period of my internship thereby having no family time in my schedule.
Another challenge was on getting over the fear of being in a professional environment. This was a huge challenge to me as I feared of messing up and being looked down by the professionals. Asking questions for clarification was an issue at the first week, but confidence grew in slowly as the co-workers were friendly and social. The social and friendly factor could be said as the main subject that helped in overcoming this challenge at a pace.
Incorporating theory lesson in the field was another challenge. It was actually hard to remember every taught lesson and apply which made me revise a lot on work done. The difference expectation from the school and real world exposure was a challenge as well. According to school, the taught lessons are one way directed to positive result whereas in real world a lot of analysis and critical thinking is involved as results differed. There are additional skills that one needs to employ in the real world which are not taught in school such as critical thinking.
Ethics
During the internship, I noticed that negligence was a common practice to some team members. Some were tasked in handling some task but they neglected or overlooked at the task which was very wrong. In school we had Construction law classes which could be said to have prepared me in this situation under the management field (Hughes, Champion & Murdoch, 2015 – Research Paper Writing Help Service). The eminent solution for this situation would be reporting of the negligence act of a teammate or the group to the higher management. Logically, it can be interpreted as betrayal or lack of solidarity with team members, but this act would ensure productivity of the work is done for the best interest of the company. In other words, construction work would be taken serious and a lot of success in building sector would exist hence more future contracts for the company.

Appendix
Lack of luxurious life as my fellow workers was a challenge. Being an intern, I had no basic salary as my fellow colleagues who were paid handsomely. They had their own expensive and private vehicles and dined in expensive hotels whereas I commuted with public transport. However, it is a non-issue since I will work hard in order to achieve similar job opportunities and enjoy the fruits of my career after graduating.
