In Chapter 2 you will have read about the various methods of viewing the structure and activation of the brain. As a reminder, these methods are:

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI)
Positron emission tomography (PET)
Computer axial tomography (CT or CAT)
Transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)
Magnetoencephalography (MEG)
Your assignment for this chapter is to take two of these approaches and compare and contrast their techniques and results. What is shown when using MRI versus fMRI? What would scientists see with MEG? What are the results of using TMS? You get to choose which two you would like to describe.

Since the book gives only brief descriptions of these techniques, you will need to do a little more research on how they work and what is being seen when they are used. To get this information, please do some online research to get a fuller picture. You will need to include in your essay your source(s) for this additional information. You must have at least two additional sources (in addition to the textbook).

For the research, stick to medical websites like WebMD, the National Institutes of Health, etc., and avoid sites that are advertising something. At the bottom of your essay, you will need to include the URL address of the site(s) where you found this information which you can do by copying and pasting the web address. In the body of the essay, be sure and tell us the name of the sites and any authors you can name.

Your entire essay will consist of 3 paragraphs. The first 2 paragraphs will detail the techniques you have chosen to describe and include the citations. Your third paragraph will describe something you found particularly interesting that you learned in this chapter that you were not aware of before.

Your essay must be a minimum of 300 words.

I strongly recommend you compose your essay in a Word document for a couple of reasons. First, Word will keep a running word count for you as well as help you catch any spelling or grammatical errors. Since each essay should reflect your best writing efforts, you will want this help. After composing the essay offline, copy and paste it into the text box that appears after you click “Reply” below. (Please do not attach files.) Students who compose their essay online are at risk of losing their work if their connection is interrupted or their computer crashes. So, please: compose offline.

After posting your essay you will be able to see other students’ posts and you will make responses to two essays. Each response post must be a minimum of 75 word each. All 3 posts must be made by 11:59pm Sunday night.

To summarize:

Choose 2 brain imaging techniques and compare and contrast them in 2 paragraphs
Include citations of additional research by giving in the body of the text the name of the site(s) you visited and insert at the bottom the URLs
Write a third paragraph describing something interesting you learned in this chapter
Make 2 response posts to other students’ essays
Your essay should be 300 words presented in 3 paragraphs
