Herbs and their therapeutic applications
For the non-standardized version of St. John’s wort, I found “Boiron Homeopathic Medicine Hypericum Perforatum”, which was delivered in a bottle of 30C pellets, which was 80 Count Tube. This was advertised as a homeopathic medicine that had no interactions or side effects and was regulated by the FDA as an OTC drug. In the instructions of the bottle it was stated to dissolve 5 pellets in the mouth three times a day until the symptoms were alleviated or as prescribed by a doctor. The price was $ 5.55 for the bottle. For the standardized version I found the “St. St. John’s wort: 500 mg for Mood Support “, which came with 100 capsules. It was sold for $ 19.99, and perhaps the most interesting thing was that it contained no instructions for taking or instructions, but had many stamps on how effective it was and what guarantee the company had, and yet nothing about it, how it should be used or what amount is acceptable. Mosby’s Handbook states that for adult parenteral capsules the recommended amount is 300 mg extract standardized to 0.3% . However, someone who uses the nonstandard version would need to consume more capsules compared to the standardized version. For the standardized version, I found “Nature’s Way Echinacea Herb”, which was available in a 400mg package of 180 capsules for only $ 16.49. The instructions specify three capsules three times daily with food to take , but everyone with an autoimmune disease should not take. The container was certified organic and provided with a sticker. It also included nutritional information as it related to daily caloric intake. The non-standard version was “Holland & Barrett Echinacea Cold & Flu” with 60 capsules for $ 8.49. It has been stated to be for the treatment of colds and flu, but should not be used by anyone with an autoimmune problem. It was stated to take three capsules per day. Mosby’s manual states that the recommended amount for adult parenteral capsules is 500 mg-1 g (McCaleb et al., 2000) and that it should not be used by people with an autoimmune problem. That said, someone who uses the versions I’ve found would need to consume a lot more capsules to get the same effect as a pure 500 mg capsule.
The standardized version I found was Nature’s Life Alfalfa Leaf Tablets, which contained 1000 mg and were available in a set of 500 pieces. It cost $ 21.19. The instruction states that if necessary you should take 2 to 6 tablets per day with the meal. The packaging had a label that was suitable for vegetarians. At 1000 mg, it was not much different from the non-standardized version, which was Nature’s Way Alfalfa Leaves (COG). This came with 100 capsules, but for only $ 12.16 and the instructions given to take only 3 a day. Mosby’s manual states that the recommended amount of parenteral capsules for adults is between 3 and 6 capsules daily, which is different than the versions I found.
Many of these herbs have been offered as standalone products or in combination with other things to combat certain conditions such as mood enhancement or cold and flu treatment, so the consumer would need more. The costs were not very different in comparison between single and combined costs. It is interesting to note that these herbs were prescribed by a practitioner while researching at my local herb shop and the practitioner’s instructions were followed, and it was emphasized that users should use them only as directed by a practitioner so they are very safe. In fact, they are just as safe as the foods you would eat every day if you use them properly. I’ve found that many people do not know that the herbs that are prescribed in most treatment regimes can be consumed as food. The preparation and frequency of consumption are responsible for the efficacy of the effects. If the wrong herb is taken or the dosage is wrong, it can be dangerous, so it is important to follow your doctor’s instructions.
