Healthcare information technology has seen significant advancements in recent years, impacting nursing practice and healthcare delivery in numerous ways. One significant trend is the use of electronic health records (EHRs) for managing and distributing patient information in healthcare organizations. Additionally, the use of social media and mobile applications for telehealth services, IoT-enabled asset tracking, and expert systems/artificial intelligence has also become increasingly prevalent.
While these technological advancements have the potential to improve patient care outcomes, they are not without risks and challenges. Data safety and legislation are major concerns, with the potential for privacy breaches, hacking, and data manipulation. Additionally, the adoption of new technologies may require extensive training for healthcare providers, leading to increased costs and potential resistance to change.
Despite these challenges, the benefits of healthcare technology are numerous. For instance, EHRs allow for efficient and accurate documentation, improving patient care outcomes by reducing errors and enhancing communication among healthcare providers. Furthermore, telehealth services provide access to healthcare for patients in remote or underserved areas, increasing patient engagement and improving care coordination.
In my view, the healthcare technology trend with the most promise for impacting nursing practice is the use of expert systems and artificial intelligence. These technologies have the potential to improve diagnosis accuracy, enhance clinical decision-making, and reduce medical errors. For example, IBM’s Watson for Oncology uses AI to recommend personalized cancer treatments, improving patient outcomes.
In conclusion, healthcare information technology is continuously evolving, and its potential impact on nursing practice and patient care outcomes cannot be underestimated. Although challenges and risks exist, the benefits of these technologies are numerous, and healthcare organizations must continue to embrace advancements to improve healthcare delivery
