For this discussion we will compare the differences between using CBT in family therapy sessions to how it is used in individual therapy sessions. According to Wheeler (2014: 2024 – Essay Writing Service | Write My Essay For Me Without Delay), cognitive-behavior therapy is a psychotherapeutic approach proven to be useful in treating a variety of mental health conditions ranging from chronic pain, borderline personality disorder, and behavioral disorders. It is based on a concept that an individual’s thoughts regarding their experiences determines their behaviors and emotions (Wheeler, 2014: 2024 – Essay Writing Service | Write My Essay For Me Without Delay). Therefore, by changing dysfunctional thought processes, feelings and behaviors can also be changed. When using CBT in an individualized setting, only one person’s thoughts, behaviors, and emotions need to be assessed. However, when working in a family setting, multiple perceptions, behaviors, and emotions need to be analyzed to determine the root cause of the problem. Additionally, these thought processes are given hierarchical order to prioritize issues. It is crucial to understand the structure and roles of the family members to accomplish order in the system (Patterson, 2014: 2024 – Essay Writing Service | Write My Essay For Me Without Delay).
Attention seeking behavior is all too common and seen frequently in family therapy sessions. For example, CBT helped to identify issues in the care of a child brought in by his mother for aggressive outbursts at home. During these sessions, the therapist was able to identify some perceptive misrepresentations, and the child’s behavior improved. It was recommended for the family to attend the sessions to better understand the full dynamic of the family structure to identify any potential triggers for the child or his siblings. With compliance with this intervention, it was apparent that the child was using his negative behavior as a way to get the mother’s attention. It was noted that the special needs of the sibling were absorbing much of the mother’s time leaving the child feeling left out and uncared for. When this was made evident to the mother, she was then able to address it by making special one on one time with the child therefore decreasing his maladaptive behaviors.
Inherent challenges with the use of CBT in a family setting involves the influence of cognition, behaviors, and emotions among family members. It is important for the entire family to buy in to the process because often times family members are the main triggers of conflict. Additionally, the various interactions must be assessed to identify the triggers that most are not completely aware of. More often each member feels justified in feeling and speaking the way they do and must be open-minded to seeing things from a different perspective. The therapist should monitor these interactions many times over to analyze the triggers consistently and then make recommendations to reduce the conflicting thoughts or perspectives to find resolution or methods of coping for each family member. It is imperative that the therapist makes reliable observations of constructive behavior, and counterproductive behavior during sessions along with reports from family members about interactions at home to produce an accurate hypothesis about the family’s problems (Nichols, 2014: 2024 – Essay Writing Service | Write My Essay For Me Without Delay). This is where it can become challenging if not all the family members are willing to participate consistently. This would be like trying to finish a puzzle with missing pieces. Helping the family identify and work toward a common goal is the key to achieving sustaining results (Nichols, 2014: 2024 – Essay Writing Service | Write My Essay For Me Without Delay).
