The last 2 lessons were about lifestyle choices regarding drinking, smoking and sexual activity. After reading through the material, were you surprised by how dramatic your health could improve if you quit smoking? In regards to drinking, often times we don’t realize that we might have a problem until something serious happens. Lab 13.1 could be an eye opener for many people who consider themselves “social drinkers.” What steps, if any, will you take to modify your behavior?

I don’t smoke or drink socially or recreationally. I don’t think it should come as a surprise to anyone at this point the harm that smoking can do to one’s health. I believe putting the label “social” before a habit or activity is just as unhealthy as the actual habit. It’s almost as if the habit is accepted more because of the label. If someone smokes and/or drinks, they smoke and/or drink. The frequency or audience doesn’t change that. Being aware of a habit is healthier than covering up the fact with a label. I feel like it can be managed better.

These do not really apply to me. I have never smoke, as just the smell of the smoke makes me cough.I try to limit my time around people that smoke as I do not enjoy smelling like smoke, breathing in the smoke, or just seeing the disgusting behavior.
I am not a drinker, I MAYBE have one drink a month. My friends hassle me because I’m one to never finish a beer when we go out. It’s just not appealing to me, and it’s too expensive.

For this last discussion, I would like you to reflect upon the information you have learned in this course. What information have you found most helpful? Realizing that change takes time, where are you in your stages of change for some of your wellness goals? Has the information in this class made you more aware of the consequences of your life choices? If so, what changes have you made or do you hope to make?

I enjoyed all of the self assessments. They really made me aware of areas I need to improve in my overall health and fitness. It’s helpful to have a game plan. I’m a very visual person so having a written plan to reference is extremely beneficial. I’ve implemented some of the things I learned. I added yoga to my fitness routine to improve my range of motion. I’ve started wearing a watch to record steps and heart rate. I make smarter eating choices. I feel like I’m moving in the right direction. I’m realistic and don’t expect overnight success or changes to happen. However, I like knowing I’m taking the right steps to reach my end goal.

I took some time to reflect on all the information I have learned in this course, and it was a pleasure. Its hard to say what single piece of information was most helpful, as I feel there are so many important aspects of our health and they all add up to whom we are. Just because we are very diligent in one aspect does not guarantee our healthiness, we have to take in all the factors and try to improve on them all and limit the negative factors.
If it didn’t take time to change our health, we would all be a perfect weight and not sick, but that is not the case. Sometimes its easy to get “sick” but it can take much longer to get healthy. All I can do is to continue to take each day at a time, slowly working towards my goals, and not to get upset if I do not see results now, as I stay determined I will see results in the next month, six months, year etc.
I must take care of my body, well because its the only one I will ever have. And the healthier we are now, will hopefully lead to a healthier life in retirement and make life more enjoyable. I need to change my stress and anxiety levels and that will greatly improve my day to day health.
