After the Cleveland murder that was aired on Facebook Live, it became clear that Facebook had an ethical duty to rescue victims of crime. According to the timeline, the intent to murder, shooting, and confession took place an hour before Facebook took the initiative to respond. Not long ago, Twitter took an extremely lax approach to the question of what content it would permit. This was after a video was shared of a journalist being beheaded. Every day, extremists are using social media platforms as facilitators for criminal activity (Idahosa, 2017). As much as Facebook hosts almost 2billion users, other platforms are also faced with the same challenge. Reviews against violence should be taken seriously by the social media sites to protect the viewers and curb down on extremists taking advantage of the channels.
3 Ways That Social Media Platforms Can Be Proactive On Uploaded Content
These sites must take initiatives to do their work of reviewing uploaded content thoroughly. Offering guidelines to the community on what is expected is the first step to ensuring people observe ethics while interacting. Responding to reports is the second most important way of being proactive on uploaded content. When it comes to reports, the community assists the platforms to identify the material that is undesirable. Hiring more employees is another crucial element since it is logical to consider the ever-growing number of social media users. It would only be reasonable to add more people to the task force so that the current ones are not overwhelmed. This committee is geared towards helping its users get satisfied by solving issues that face them such as inappropriate posts, cyberbullying and violent posts. Second, Facebook could campaign on content that should be uploaded by focusing on issues that affect humanity, such as global warming, feminism, environment, or world news. Since social media is prone to trends, Facebook could generate posts that encourage people to upload content that helps build humanity.

In conclusion, the question of how to regulate uploaded content has troubled social media platforms for quite a while now. With the continuous advancement in technology, it is not possible to contain its growth; and so is the number of users who are getting conversant with these platforms. The only hope is that safeguards are put in place to enable management with filtering what is broadcasted. Otherwise, it will be chaos and never-ending cases for the oversight committees. Ethics have to be maintained one way or the other since social media platforms have significant influence over society. It is in great hope that the measures in place will be able to keep up with technology and the users to achieve a harmonized environment.
