Part II: Using full sentences, please answer THREE of the following. Make sure to answer all of the question(s) posed for each of the ones that you do (that is usually what gets major points deducted, and we don’t want that!)

1. Write a page paper – Describe two specific ways in which Reconstruction was a success and two specific ways that Reconstruction was a failure.

2. Write a page paper – Describe Four Progressive changes, laws, or amendments to the Constitution. In doing this, make sure to explain why each of these was specifically Progressive.

8. Franklin Roosevelt initiated two New Deals. What was the difference between the First New Deal and the Second New Deal? What was the purpose of each? How effective were they?

10. Explain who the muckrakers like Jacob Riis were, what they did, and why they were important in American history.

11. Explain the differences in philosophies and tactics between Booker T. Washington and W. E. B. DuBois. Make sure to be specific with each of their plans. Also, in your opinion, which philosophy was better for its time? Why?

13. Explain who the Populists (or People’s Party) were, why they were founded, why they succeeded, and why they are important to American history despite only lasting for less than a decade.

14. Explain four ways that the popularization of the automobile changed America and/or American culture. (Make sure to fully explain each of your answers and clearly show how the car affected America/American culture. I do not just want a list)

15. Write a page paper – Describe two myths in American history from 1865 to 1940 that you believed before this class and what realities you have discovered thus far this semester. This can include some aspect of history that you didn’t know about or have been surprised at learning. Make sure to be specific with these two.

How’s everyone doing? See, you were nervous about this test, but you are doing fine! Only one section left–Keep up the good work!!

Part III–Short Essays: Using full sentences and specific examples from the readings and class discussions, please address TWO of the following questions. These must be written as two separate essays and should be at least two good-sized paragraphs each (though you don’t have to go nuts.) Make sure to address all parts of all of the questions posed, since some of my questions have multiple questions in them.

1. The United States became an international player during the Gilded Age and into the first two decades of the twentieth century. Explain how and why the United States began pushing beyond its own borders, and in what ways America did so. Also, explain both the positive and negative consequences of American imperialism, for the United States as well as for the countries the United States got involved in.

2. You are to compare and contrast the Progressive Era and the Gilded Age. Using specific examples and describing laws and trends in both eras, explain how the Gilded Age led to the Progressive Era. Then briefly explain how each of these eras had and/or has had long-term impacts on America

3. Briefly explain how race relations evolved during the era from the end of slavery in 1865 to the 1920s. Using specific examples, describe what went right in terms of social justice for African Americans and what went wrong. Make sure to show change over time. (You are allowed to focus instead on Native Americans, if you desire, but make sure to be specific.)

4. How did the Roaring Twenties emerge after the 1910s? Using specific examples and describing trends in the US in BOTH decades, explain how the economy and society in the 1920s clashed with the ways before the First World War. Then briefly explain how this first decade of “Modern America” affected America and Americans socially, economically, and in terms of clashes between generations.

5. Explain how the Great Depression came about. Make sure to explain what the Great Depression was, what made it so “great” and why it continued for so long. Think about who suffered during the depression. (Note: With this question, don’t just say everyone suffered. Explain what groups suffered, how they suffered, and why.) How did people cope? How did the government under Hoover and FDR try to help people during the Depression? Finally, what were the lasting effects of the Great Depression on America?

6. This essay question deals with the First World War. Briefly explain why the US waited to get involved in the war. Why did we get involved in each war when we did? (Note: That includes why we didn’t get involved earlier and what brought us in.) How did we do, both on the front and on the homefront? What were the results of the war in America? In other words, what happened in America—its society, politics, and/or in international affairs–in the years right after the war?

7. Using specific examples, please explain what you consider to be the three most important people, events, inventions, laws, or movements that occurred in the US from 1865 to 1940. Make sure to explain and properly defend why you think these are the most important to American history and to today.
