The Gospels of Matthew and Mark
Mark 6:45-52 vs. Matthew 14:22-33
Matthew 14:22-33 and Mark 6:45-52 carry almost similar messages as they ear both classified as gospel books. The two are structured following similar chronology when talking about the story of Jesus’ walk on the waters. Jesus sends away the large crowds of people then he heads to the mountainside so that he can pray to God while heading to the mountain, Jesus saw his disciples out at the sea, the disciples were so astonished when they saw him walking over the water (Martin, 84). The disciples went back to the land so as to bring the sick to Jesus, by whom they got healed of their diseases once Jesus touched them. Matthew is, however, a bit lengthy and more descriptive than Mark. Matthew gives a description of the conversation between Jesus and Peter on how he (Peter) can walk on water too. The conversation begins with Jesus calling too go to him on water but Peter was hesitant and due to the little faith he started to sink, but then he started calling the name of Jesus so that he can safe hi, of which he does. This entire story is not captured in Mark. The two books, however, captures the story of Jesus going out with the disciples in the fortnight. What he says to them however differs. For instance in Mark, when the disciples thought he is a ghost, Jesus says them, “have the courage and not to be afraid.” On the other hand, in Matthew writes that Jesus told them to “be of good cheer and not to be afraid” (Martin, 85). So there exist some modifications. The passages show that there is a higher likelihood that Matthew copied from Mark and not the other way round since Mark is brief while Matthew is lengthy. Thus it would be easier to expound on Mark than to shorten from Mathew. Generally, Matthew and Mark are written in similar order but divergence only occurs with peter’s walk on the water and then there are some wordings which differ but both carry the same overall meaning. Thus, these passages are in support of the hypothesis that Mathew succeeded Mark.
Mark 9:2-10 vs. Matthew 17:1-13
Both Mark 9:2-10 and Matthew 17:1-13 in general talk of the same thing, which is the transfiguration of Jesus. However, there are some differences which are a clear indication that Matthew did some editing and changed some wording on the Markan Gospel: Mark writes that “Jesus took James, Peter, and James.” Mathew, on the other hand, wrote that “Jesus took the three disciples mentioned in Mark, but he adds that John was a brother to James.” A different instance is on the actual account of transfiguration; Mark describes how Jesus’ clothes got transfigured while Mark describes the same with a slight addition. Matthew describes how Jesus’ face together with his clothes were transfigured (Muddiman et al., 53).
The editing by Matthew is also noticeable on his comparison of Jesus’ clothes with the “white light while Mark wrote that his clothes became dazzling white and this whiteness was more than anyone could have bleached it.” The chapter in the gospel of Mark describes Jesus as Rabbi as Peter called him which is in another name for a teacher, while in Matthew, Jesus is only referred to as Lord. For the two books, the voice which came from the clouds said somewhat different things. The gospel of Mark states that, there came a voice from the clouds saying that, “This is my son, whom I love. Listen to him!” while Matthew writes, “This is my son, who I love; with him, I am well pleased. Listen to him!” (Muddiman et al., 56). These clearly indicate how and why Matthew edited and changed the Gospel of Mark.
Conclusion
It is obvious that Matthew is indebted to the Gospel of Mark. He makes use of it as a literal model and incorporates most of it into his Gospel more than any other gospel. The success of the stories over the gospel treatise is, of course, the indication for the domination of Markan layout. There are also indications that the Gospel of Jesus according to Mark is what formed the basis for Mathew. It is kind of Matthew was working with Mark to compose his gospel, or more or less so, up to together with chapter 14 and 17. He follows Markan format from the beginning to the end with some brief edits and changes for an extended discourse: the omissions made on a handful of some events and the rearrangements on the discipleship missions.
