Ethics in Criminal Justice
The first story is about reporting a police officer I witnessed acting unethically. As I was walking along the street, I came across a police car that was parked in my neighbor’s sidewalk. Being a curious person, I wanted to know what the vehicle was doing there: Had someone in our neighborhood committed a crime? I wanted to know. Therefore, I walked slowly towards it, and when I peeped inside, no one was there. No sooner had I moved my eyes from the car’s window, than I saw the officer doing something through the side mirror of the vehicle. It is as if he was putting package at the trunk of a civilian vehicle. He seemed shocked when he saw me and quickly gestured me to approach him. He asked me what I saw and I said nothing. Not believing my statement, he confessed that he had been planting evidence in the car of a known dealer so as to support a charge against him. He further went on to indicate that his intentions were good and justified and hence begged me not to report what I saw. In my opinion at the time, the officer had a good point. This action reflects conventional morality since my moral reasoning was based on what the officer thought was right.
The second story pertains to the issue of necessary force. In this regard, I am reminded of an incident where the police used unnecessary force on me. There was this time I was dropping off my cousin at a gas station at around 10pm. The officer who had stopped us really gave us a hard time about being out there and asked us to tell him what kinds of drugs we were carrying. After he finally ran our names and discovered that I had an exceptional traffic ticket, he forcefully arrested me and put me at the back of his vehicle and drove me to the station stating that he somehow knew most people my age sell drugs. I knew this was wrong, and I later informed his superiors and this prompted him to apologize. This action reflects post-conventional morality since my moral reasoning was based on individual rights and justice.
