10 Page essay on Ibn Battuta life/ travels
1. All papers must be double-spaced. Make sure that your name appears
somewhere on the paper; either on a separate cover sheet or on the first page.
Use one-inch margins on all sides. Page length does not include title page,
illustrations, notes (foot or end), bibliography, and appendices. In other words,
if you have been assigned to write a 10-12 page paper, it must be ten pages
minimum of text. Each page must be numbered, except the title page. Title
pages are optional but you must have a title. If you do not use a title page (again,
title pages are optional), put the title on the first page of your paper.
2. All pages should have one inch margins on all four sides. Standard font is Times
New Roman, size 12 pt.
3. All papers must have a bibliography, and remember that you need at least one
primary source (more would be better). The bibliography is always the last page
of the paper. Your bibliography should include every source you read or looked
at, including all of the sources that you cite in your notes. However, you might
have more sources listed in your bibliography than are cited in your notes.
4. All papers must have documented sources in the form of footnotes or endnotes.
Either is acceptable and is a matter of personal choice. General information
does not have to be cited. For instance, if you state “Adam Smith was born in
Scotland,”that information does not have to be cited. If you quote or refer to
one particular author’s opinion about Smith or his texts, that information has to
be cited. For example, if you say “Adam Smith was born in Scotland to educated
parents who ensured that he too was educated” that needs to be cited. If you
are uncertain, cite. It is better to have too many citations than too few.
Ibn Battuta was a Moroccan scholar and explorer who is known for his extensive travels throughout the Muslim world and beyond. He was born in 1304 in the city of Tangier and received a traditional Islamic education, studying subjects such as theology, law, and literature.
In 1325, at the age of 21, Battuta set out on a journey that would take him to over 40 countries and cover a distance of over 75,000 miles. He traveled to the Holy City of Mecca for the Hajj, or pilgrimage, and then continued on to other parts of the Arab world, including Egypt, Syria, and Iraq. From there, he traveled to Iran, Central Asia, and India, visiting the cities of Delhi and Agra and exploring the court of the Mongol ruler, Tamerlane.
Battuta’s travels also took him to Southeast Asia and China, where he visited the court of the Ming Emperor and marveled at the Great Wall. He also traveled to the Maldives, the Horn of Africa, and many other parts of the Islamic world.
