For our essay, I would like you to explore an aspect of Hinduism or Judaism in greater depth than it is presented in Living Religions. This essay involves research and should be mostly factual in nature – it is not a personal essay or opinion paper. Choose a research topic. • The Hindu Guru in the West. Westerners (that is, those living in the US, Europe, and other countries in the European tradition) have embraced Hindu practices in many ways – including yoga, meditation, and even devotional practice – despite the obvious fact that Westerners often take a different approach which doesn’t take the context of traditional Hinduism into account. Famous gurus have introduced these practices and excited interest in them, including living teachers like Bikram Choudhury as well as those of previous generations (Maharishi Mahesh Yogi of Transcendental Meditation and guru to the Beatles, Vivekananda, and Paramahansa Yogananda are examples). Choose one of these figures and write about their life and influence on the West. Be sure to devote a body paragraph to criticism if the figure has been involved in controversy. • Hindu Nationalism in Modern South Asia. Hinduism’s reputation for tolerance seems challenged when we look at some of the nationalist figures who are reacting against the regional and religious tension between Hinduism and Islam. What are the roots of the conflict between Hinduism and Islam? How have Hindu nationalists worked to paint Muslims as outsiders despite the fact that Islam has been in South Asia for over a thousand years? Very recent events can be relevant, including widely criticized actions taken by Prime Minister Modi in Kashmir. • The Book of Job. Read at least the “short version” of the Biblical book (Chapters 1, 2, and 42 more or less tell the story.) Why is this story considered such an influence on the Western ideas of suffering, faith, and morality? This is one of the more challenging subjects as it requires use of outside sources (such as classic commentaries by Jewish authorities) that analyze this topic. • Anti-Semitism and Medieval Europe. The ignorant and racist notion that “the Jews killed Jesus” has caused the Jewish people to suffer tremendously under Christian rule. How did these ideas become ingrained in European thinking during events of the Middle Ages such as the Crusades and the Inquisition/Reconquista? It’s an option to contrast Jewish life under Christendom with the broader acceptance Judaism enjoyed under Muslim rule in the same period (in Spain and elsewhere).
